“``So, question, what happens in an individual spiritual formation that puts them on the path towards one or the other? A big shot boasting or a flourishing olive tree and the answer to that question, the key to that question brackets, Psalm 52. Look at verse one again. God's faithful is constant. Now, go down to verse eight. I trust in god's faithful love forever and ever. Friends, your posture towards the committed, faithful love of god will form you either into a boasting big shot or a flourishing olive tree. Your dismissal of or your dependence on the faithful love of god will form you into either one or the other.”

“Doeg's treachery cost the lives of 85 priests. Even though the king, eventual king, would escape. Judas' treachery caused the death of the great high priest, Jesus Christ. But god will not be mocked. The anointed of god will always triumph. David eventually became king and Jesus resurrected from death. The biggest, loudest, most arrogant, obnoxious, big shot boasting cannot thwart the faithful love of god who always keeps his promises. So, church, be clear eyed. Walk in the light in genuine community, allowing others to speak into your life. Ask yourself right now. Before god, am I making life work through my own wits and my own wisdom or my wealth, my schemes for advancement and security? Or am I depending on the faithful love of the transcendent god poured out on me through Jesus?”

“Because there's a little dough egg in each of us. If our refuge is not in the faithful love of god, then it doesn't matter what position in society we occupy. We are flirting with big wanna be big shotism. And while we may not compare our actions against god's anointed on the scale of doags against David or Judas' against great king David's greater son, Jesus. But make no mistake, it is the same kind of treachery. Of treason Church, it really is this simple. Are you placing your entire being, your hope for security, for your future, your eternity, your present in the faithful love of the transcendent god who has demonstrated and guaranteed his delivering power for you in the person of Jesus Christ. Or not.”

“Like an olive tree in the sunlight. Soak it in. Be immersed in it. Be nourished by it. Celebrate it. Revel in it. Delight in it. Praise god for it. Be energized by it. Be stabilized by it. Return to it over and over and over and over and over again. And then when you see the pattern of big shot boasting beginning to creep up in your heart, when you find yourself relying on your wit or your wisdom or your wealth to make life work, Understand in that moment, are on the path of self deception that leads ultimately to destruction, and there is only one response for the child of God. It is to stop and turn around and to run back to the faithful of god. Return to Jesus, the anointed your god. Lift the anointed of god. Lift your face from the mud and bask in the sunlight of the faithful love of god. It really is church this week simple. Your posture towards the committed, faithful love of god will form you either into a boasting, wannabe big shot. Or a flourishing olive tree. So, I wonder which one will you be?”
