Summer in the Psalms - Psalm 42

Psalm 42 does not merely describe despair. Psalm 42 teaches the hurting soul how to walk through despair to get to God. The text starts with a beautiful picture, but not a peaceful one. The deer is not standing beside quiet streams just enjoying a fresh drink. The deer is desperate, dry, and in real need of water.

The opening image says the soul has to admit its thirst. The psalmist is not pretending everything is fine. The soul is saying, “This is where things are today. There is a missing place inside.” God is not afraid of that kind of honesty. Honesty is not the enemy of faith. Lament is what faith sounds like when the wounded are still talking to God. Tears do not disqualify a person from worship. Sometimes tears are worship.

The refrain interrupts the darkness: “Why so downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God.” The word downcast carries the picture of a sheep tipped over, unable to get back up on its own. The soul is not just sad. The soul is stuck. The soul cannot roll itself back over. That is why the psalmist does not say, “Therefore I will quit.” The psalmist says, “Therefore I will remember.”

Remembering God is more than recalling information. Remembering takes God’s past faithfulness and applies it to the present darkness. When one person cannot remember, another person can remember for that person. The gathered people of God become part of the mercy of God, helping lift the downcast sheep back up.

Psalm 43 then prays, “Send your light and your faithful care. Let them lead me.” God’s light leads the soul home, to the holy mountain, to the place where God dwells, to the altar, to the throne room filled with grace and mercy. The blood of Jesus makes that place a place of salvation, redemption, healing, and forgiveness.

The refrain says, “I will yet praise him.” Yet means again. The soul may be crying today, but that is not the last song. Jesus knows thirst, tears, abandonment, death, and resurrection. Because Christ lives, the downcast soul can face tomorrow. The journey ends with a song, and the soul can be told to keep walking.
