#CallTrustRest
“David is in this difficult place, and the Psalms invite you and I to rest in the character of God. David is tossing and turning in bed, and instead of pulling out his phone and turning on Netflix, he goes to God, which maybe is something that many of you do, and maybe it's something that some of you have never done. And in Psalm four, we're gonna see this very simple progression. It's call, trust, and rest. The entire Psalm can be summarized into those three words.”

#SilenceToHear
“See, here's the crazy thing. When you have disconnected from the loud and busy of everyday life, you desire silence. You desire peace and rest with the Lord. But church, if we're just gonna live in this rat race, where we're gonna allow our phone to dictate our life, or we're gonna allow noise to penetrate every moment of our day, we're never gonna experience this. I wanna let you know in those silent moments is when you can learn to trust God to speak to you. If you're willing to pull back and slow down those moments of silence, God wants to speak in those. But if you don't wanna hear God's voice, just fill your life with everything that you can. Drowned out God's voice. I beg you, don't do the latter.”

#FromDistressToPeace
“What a shift. What a shift in these first couple verses from being in distress to the end of verse three. David has a peace. He says, the lord hears when I call to him. He starts out begging, god, answer me. And then he very quickly gets, god, you will be my peace. What a shift from being pressed to being free. Many of us right now are asking God for peace. Many of us, we find ourselves in a situation of distress, and we cry out to God. God, will you give me peace in this situation? Some of you right now, you relate more to verse one. Answer me when I call you. God, where are you? I'm in a distressful situation. And my hope is that as we continue to grow in spiritual maturity, maturity, that as we continue to walk faithfully with God, we will understand his righteousness so we can shift where we say, I can slow down. I can breathe. Even though this is taking place right now, I know God loves me.”

#SilenceIsBlessing
“Silence is awkward. It's tough. A lot of times, we view silence as disapproval. Maybe for some of you, you had a negative relationship with your parents. And when they didn't like you, they just didn't talk to you. And I want you to know that David is actually interpreting silence as different. He's not interpreting silence as a punishment from God. He's saying, this is a blessing that we can be still and be with the Lord.”

#SearchMyHeartTonight
“And David does something that I think is really vulnerable here. He says, God, will you search my heart? He says, when you lay in bed, ask God to search your heart. This is a pattern that I've practiced for almost a decade now, and I've shared this with you where I lay in bed at night and before I fall asleep, just ask God to search my heart. Lord, search my heart and know me. Is there any way in me that doesn't honor you? It's a time to lay in bed. It's a time to confess our sin. It's a time to get right with God before we sleep. And so David is crying angry about something. He's choosing not to sin. And his move, his playbook, is to ask the holy spirit to search him. Holy spirit, will you search me? Will you know what's going on in my life? Will you draw my heart to you?”

#GodsRighteousness
“But some of you, you're new to faith, you're new to Christianity, and you don't fully understand God's righteousness. And so you're kinda thinking to yourself, what does that even mean? What does it even mean that God is righteous? It means that God always does what is right. It means God sees perfectly. He judges fairly, and he never acts outside of his good character. That's what God's righteousness means. It means God knows what will happen. It's who he is. It's part of his character. It is a core of who God is. It is how he acts. It is a quality that you and I will always see exist in God.”

#RighteousAnger
“If you turn your eyes back to verse four, David starts it interestingly. He says, tremble and and do not sin. Another word for tremble is be angry. And we live in this culture where we think you can only be angry and sin. If you were here with us, I think it was last fall, we went through Ephesians. And in Ephesians chapter four verse 26, it says it teaches us to, like, you it's okay. You can be angry and do not sin. Right? In your anger, do not sin. And so David is saying, hey, angry, but I'm making a choice not to fall into sin. You say, how do we do that? That's called a life filled with the fruit of the holy spirit. It's a life of deep trust in God. It's where God is working deeply in our life. It's his ongoing faithfulness.”

#StandOnPastFaith
“David turns the psalm. He says, even though I'm pressed, I have a cognitive reminder that god is with me. Focus on verse three with me. Focus on that very first word, no. If you're someone who likes to underline or highlight in your bible, you can do that. Circle the word no, maybe underline it. David says this. He says, no matter what emotions are happening in my life, I cognitively that God is good. I cognitively know that God is faithful. I cognitively know that God hears my prayers. Because David is standing on God's past faithfulness. Even though he's in a current situation where God has yet to answer his prayer, David is relying on God's past faithfulness in his life.”
