The King of Glory Enters: Anticipation in Psalm 24

Psalm 24 begins with Yahweh, not David, not Israel, and not anybody else. David puts all attention on the Lord: “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.” The world, every creature, every person, every mountain and valley belongs to Him because He made it out of nothing and established it by His power. God’s ownership is not cold or disconnected. The Creator knows every little piece of life, and His ownership becomes loving care, rightful authority, and a call to submit to the One who made, loves, died for, and rose for His people.

The holiness of God then raises the question nobody can dodge: “Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?” David describes clean hands, a pure heart, no love for falsehood, and no deceitful speech. The standard reaches both outside and inside. Clean hands are blameless actions, while a pure heart is a whole heart without mixture, like refined metal. Sinful people do not naturally live up to that standard, and every person falls short of standing in God’s holy place on personal merit.

Christ stands at the center of the answer. Jesus alone lived the perfect, righteous, obedient life before God. Jesus alone can stand on the holy hill, and His righteousness becomes the only ground on which sinners can receive blessing and vindication from the God of salvation. The great exchange does not make genuine holiness unimportant. The righteousness received from Christ works itself out through the Spirit in a real battle against sin, a real pursuit of Christ’s face, and a real longing for the day sin will be gone for good.

The King of Glory brings Psalm 24 to its crescendo. The ancient gates lift up because Yahweh is coming into the city. The God who is above and beyond creation also comes down to dwell with His people. The ark pictured His promised presence among Israel, and its arrival in Zion gave Israel reason for joy, worship, and glad anticipation.

The Lord of hosts is strong and mighty in battle. God fought for His people from the garden onward, defeated the enemy at the cross, and triumphed through the resurrection. Christ remains the Warrior King who does not lose a single battle and who will finish what He has won. The return of Jesus gives believers the highest expectation in a world filled with weak leaders and broken promises. The King is coming, and those who belong to Him can wait with joy rather than dread.
