Psalm 145 comes as David’s last psalm, and David does not finish his life bragging on Goliath, the throne, or all the wild things God let him do. David finishes by giving God glory. David found the secret of life, y’all: a life full of worship and praise for the Lord.

Psalm 145 puts praise right in front of God’s people as perspective. Breath in the lungs, freedom to worship, and the goodness of God all become reasons to say, “Great is the Lord.” David says that no one can measure God’s greatness, and that each generation has to tell its children about his mighty acts. Praise is not just noise in a room. Praise is a spiritual inheritance.

The seven Hebrew words for praise show that praise has shape. Tehillah sings out God’s glory. Barak bows low in reverence. Halal brings attention to God’s glory. Shabach shouts with triumph. Yadah lifts the hands. Praise includes songs, posture, preaching, shouting, and surrender, but worship goes even deeper. Worship is being realigned with what God created a person to do. If the stars were made to worship, if the mountains bow down, if the oceans roar his greatness, then everything that has breath has a reason to praise the Lord.

Psalm 145:4 presses that praise into the home. A life of praise is caught, not just taught. Religious rhythms alone can make kids fluent in church lingo without leading them into relationship with Jesus. Solomon watched David, and when God asked Solomon what he wanted, Solomon reached back to what he had seen in his father. The fear of the Lord became the beginning of wisdom because David had modeled more than words.

Circumstances also try to steal praise. The enemy wants eyes off Jesus and onto the storm, just like Peter sinking on the water. John 16 says trouble will come, but Christ has overcome the world. Paul and Silas praised in prison, not just because they needed out, but because God was worthy. Their praise shook foundations and opened a door for a jailer’s whole household to believe.

Joshua’s Jericho shows that praise makes a way where no way can be seen. Warriors were told to march, blow trumpets, and shout. God tore down the wall and turned the wall itself into a bridge. That kind of praise begins with a yes to Jesus, because the light that reaches a family starts with Christ living inside.
