Psalm 138 gives a deep expression of gratitude for who the Lord is, what he has done, and what he will still do. David had written heavy prayers, hard prayers, and prayers full of lament, but David kept tethering those difficult places to thankfulness for the character of God. Gratitude is not pretending life is easy. Gratitude is choosing to filter pain, unanswered prayers, and waiting through the truth that God is still worthy to be praised.

Gratitude asks whether prayer has become mostly requests and complaints, or whether thanksgiving still has a real place before God. David enters with thanks because God’s character is enough. If God never does another thing, he is still worthy, and on this side of the cross there is even more reason to be grateful.
