Day 1: Partnering with God in the Dust and Dirt

Work is not a curse but a sacred collaboration. Genesis reveals humans were formed from soil to steward it, mirroring God’s creative care. The Hebrew word for work (abad) also means worship, binding labor to divine purpose. Like Adam tending Eden, every act of ordering chaos—whether spreadsheets, teaching, or parenting—echoes God’s design. To work is to join Him in making the world flourish, one intentional effort at a time. [20:39]

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. (Genesis 2:15, ESV)

Day 2: The Carpenter’s Quiet Witness

Jesus spent 90% of His life hidden in a workshop, shaping wood and stone. His obscurity dignifies ordinary labor, proving no job is too small for eternal significance. Paul echoes this, urging believers to “work with your hands” so outsiders see integrity in mundane faithfulness. Whether changing diapers or coding software, hidden work trains us to trust God’s unseen economy of glory. [24:04]

Like Bezalel crafting the tabernacle, every act of creativity—teaching, engineering, gardening—bridges heaven and earth. Work done well protests chaos, declaring, “This is not all there is.” [17:03]

See, I have called by name Bezalel… and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, to make artistic designs. (Exodus 31:2–4, ESV)

Israel’s exile forced the land to rest 70 years—a stark reminder: we break when we don’t pause. Rest isn’t laziness; it’s rebellion against a world that worships productivity. [45:57]

Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest. (Exodus 34:21, ESV)

Day 5: Painting Leaves for the New Jerusalem

An artist fixated on one leaf died frustrated, unaware his work would bloom fully in eternity. Our labor—teaching, justice-seeking, parenting—plants seeds for the New Jerusalem. Colossians 3:23 promises no effort done “for the Lord” is wasted. Someday, artists will paint masterpieces, leaders will govern cities, and every leaf will find its tree. [49:13]

Sermon Summary

Proverbs calls God’s people to live with the grain of God’s wisdom and design, and work sits right in the middle of that calling because it takes up so much of life. Work becomes twisted when identity gets tied to a paycheck, a title, productivity, advancement, or the hope of finally getting to retire. The biblical story pushes back against Babylon’s picture of humans as tools for the gods and against the modern story that says a person is only as valuable as what that person produces.

God blesses humanity in Eden and then gives humanity work. Genesis frames work not as punishment, but as image bearers partnering with God in taking the world somewhere, moving chaos toward order, goodness, beauty, and truth. Adam’s work in the ground carries the language of worship, which means ordinary labor can become an act unto the Lord. Christ’s hidden years as a carpenter dignify the work that feels small, obscure, or unseen.

Genesis 3 brings thorns, thistles, sweat, and toil into the picture. Egypt then shows work at its worst: Pharaoh turns people into brick-making machines, drives quotas higher, and calls them lazy when they cry out for freedom. Pharaoh’s voice still shows up in the inner critic that says, “You’re behind. Make more bricks. Work harder.” God’s Spirit, however, fills Bezalel not to make bricks but to make beauty, restoring work from slavery and utility into craftsmanship that hosts the presence of God.

Jeremiah sends exiles into Babylon with a surprising command: build houses, plant gardens, raise families, and seek the peace and prosperity of the city. Exile does not make work meaningless. Work becomes a faithful act of protest against darkness when teachers form minds, artists create beauty, lawyers pursue justice, parents nurture children, and laborers make good tables. Paul’s call to lead a quiet life, mind one’s business, and work with one’s hands gives dignity to faithfulness that may never become visible or impressive.

Sabbath resists Pharaoh’s economy because God’s people are not slaves, tools, or productivity machines. Rest becomes trust, obedience, and the confession that God is God and human beings are not. Eternity then gives work its deepest horizon: every faithful leaf and branch belongs to the coming tree, the New Jerusalem, where the curse is gone and God’s servants reign forever. Christ’s finished work finally frees good works from becoming an attempt at salvation. God’s handiwork does good work because grace has already made rest possible.

Work done right is an act of protest against the darkness of this world. In and of itself can and should be worshipped unto the Lord. You may never be recognized. You may never be paid what you deserved, but God sees all of it.
