Proverbs brings the subject of gossip right down where people live, because Proverbs does not get much more practical than this. Solomon gives wisdom for money, marriage, work, anger, envy, relationships, and about 150 sayings on words. Proverbs 18 says death and life are in the power of the tongue, so gossip is not just talking about somebody who is not in the room. Gossip is words about another person who is not present that carry the power of death, death to a reputation, a relationship, a community, or even the condition of the heart.
Solomon puts three pictures in front of the listener. The first picture is firewood. “Without wood, fire goes out,” and “without a gossip, conflict dies down.” The image is plain enough: conflict may flare up, but gossip keeps throwing another log on the fire. A person may carry firewood in the form of rumors, things seen, things heard, and the question becomes what that person will do with it. Galatians gives a good filter: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and faithfulness. The question is not only, “Is it true?” but also, “Is it kind? Is it good? Will it bring peace, or will it create conflict?”
The second picture is dessert. Solomon says a gossip’s words are like choice food, and that is why gossip pulls so hard. When somebody says, “Do you know what I heard?” it can feel like a favorite dessert being waved under the nose. But Proverbs says that choice food goes down to the innermost being. Gossip may taste good, but once swallowed it sinks into the heart, changes thoughts, shifts motivations, and pollutes the way a person sees another person. Jesus says the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart, so what gets taken in eventually comes back out.
The third picture is a trap. Gossip works, and that is why people use it for revenge, advantage, belonging, or feeling better about themselves. But Proverbs says a fool’s lips are a trap for his life, and the one who digs a pit falls into it. The trap set for somebody else often catches the one who set it. Christ has made a different life possible. The Spirit moves into those who belong to Jesus, and the Spirit forms people who do not have to live like everybody else. When gossip flares up, the wise choice is not another log, not another bite, and not another trap, but words that give life.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Words carry life or death Proverbs does not treat speech as harmless noise. The tongue has power to protect or tear down what matters: a reputation, a friendship, a church, a community. Gossip becomes deadly because it speaks about an absent person in a way that cannot build them up or heal what is broken. [55:11]
- 2. Gossip keeps fires burning Solomon’s firewood picture makes conflict feel very concrete. A quarrel may be dying down until somebody adds one more log by repeating what did not need to be repeated. Wisdom asks whether a word will bring peace or whether it will keep heat, smoke, and damage alive. [58:32]
- 3. Sweet words can poison hearts Gossip often feels delicious because fallen people like having the scoop. Proverbs warns that those words do not stay on the tongue, they go down into the innermost being. What gets received into the heart begins to shape opinions, motives, and eventually the words that come back out. [65:59]
- 4. The trap catches the trapper Gossip may work for revenge, advantage, or social status, but Proverbs says that kind of strategy turns back on the one using it. The mouth of the fool becomes his own devastation. A person may think the trap is being set for somebody else, but the soul, reputation, and relationships of the trapper are also being snared. [73:42]
- 5. The Spirit makes different speech possible Christ does not merely forgive destructive words, he gives a new life by the Spirit. That new life means people do not have to talk like the world talks when rumors start moving. A church, a home, a workplace, or a school can feel different when words become life giving instead of death dealing.
