Where Have All the Prophets Gone? // Bishop D. A. Sherron

Jeremiah 29 brings a word to people who wanted a fast way out, but God gives them a word that forms them in the place they wanted to escape. God says to the exiles, “I carried you into exile,” which means Babylon acted, but Babylon was not sovereign. The Lord did not lose control because his people landed in a messy place. God addressed them there.

Hananiah’s word promised a quick escape. Within two years, the yoke of Babylon would be broken. That kind of word sounded hopeful, and that is what made it dangerous. It offered relief without repentance, restoration without formation, return without responsibility, promises without process, and destiny without discipleship. In a “fix it” world of Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, viral does not mean credible, and celebrity does not mean God has spoken.

Jeremiah’s word tells the truth. The exile would not end quickly, so God tells his people to build houses, settle down, plant gardens, marry, raise children, increase, and seek the shalom of the city. God does not give them immediate evacuation. God gives them formation, faithfulness, and future restoration. Since they would be there, they had to cultivate there. Since the season would be longer than expected, they had to stop living for a quick exit and start building a lasting legacy.

True prophetic ministry is always forged in times of crisis. Crisis exposes, obedience shapes, character sustains, and calling emerges. The prophetic is not just prediction about the future. The prophetic is also analysis of the present and formation for the people. The prophet does not merely announce what is coming. The prophet interprets what is happening, and the word of the Lord produces obedience now.

Jeremiah 29 moves God’s people from “bless me” prophecy to “build us” prophecy. Bless me prophecy asks when the door is opening, when the season is changing, when the money is coming, and when enemies will fall. Build us prophecy asks what must be constructed, what must be planted, what children must be taught, and what kind of community must survive until restoration comes. If a prophetic word cannot build beyond one lifetime, it may be ambition wearing spiritual language.

The prophetic people must remain distinct without becoming detached. The city must be prayed for, served, and loved without becoming Babylonian in spirit. Discernment becomes the mark of maturity, because false prophets may sound hopeful while still leading people away from God. True prophets are not merely informed by God. They are burdened with God, carrying his grief, his hope, and his heartbeat.
