Promises Kept | BIG PICTURE | Week 22

Jesus is the Savior from the penalty and power of sin now, and He is coming to save His people from the wrath of God and the presence of sin. That coming salvation is not a wish. It is confidence and joy in Jesus’ expected return as the warrior King who ends the anti kingdom and sets everything right.

John sees the next phase of Christ’s return in Revelation 20:1-6. Satan, the dragon, the ancient serpent, the devil, and the accuser, is bound for a thousand years. The oldest deceiver, the wielder of chaos and evil, is shut down. Satan cannot deceive the nations, tempt with the same force, or keep wielding evil in the world.

The millennial kingdom is a world where evil has no effective influence because Jesus reigns. Christ reigns over a kingdom of peace while Satan is confined, and believers reign with Him. John sees thrones already occupied by the bride of Christ, believers raised from death or called in the rapture, and he sees tribulation martyrs raised to join them. The anti kingdom killed these faithful people for their testimony, but Jesus raises them to reign. Nothing Satan does is final. Everything Satan destroys is reversible through relationship with Christ.

The kingdom is not heaven or the final eternal state. The thousand years are a real, temporary kingdom on earth where Jesus fulfills what God promised. Converted Israel and Gentile believers who survive the tribulation enter that kingdom, while those who rejected Christ are separated out in judgment. Israel repents, recognizes the One they pierced, and receives the salvation God promised.

Yahweh stands behind the need for this kingdom. God’s name means that He is self-existent, eternal, faithful, and loyal to every covenant He makes. God promised Israel land, peace, prosperity, salvation, a restored Davidic throne, and a worldwide kingdom under the Messiah. Those promises have not yet been fulfilled in their fullness, so Jesus returns faithful and true to fulfill them.

God’s faithfulness to Israel becomes reassurance for every believer. The millennial kingdom puts a bow on the promises, prophecies, and long plan of God. God has yet to fail, and He will not fail. Doubt, obedience, and uncertainty about the path ahead all meet the same answer: Yahweh keeps His word.
