No Longer Orphans: The Promised Holy Spirit — John 14:15-31 (09.13.2026)

Jesus meets His disciples in John 14 just hours before the cross, when fear and confusion are beginning to settle over them. Jesus tells them, “Let not your hearts be troubled,” not because trouble is unreal, but because they will not face it alone. Christ promises that the Father will send another Helper, the Spirit of truth, who will dwell in believers forever. The Spirit comes alongside to comfort, counsel, teach, lead, and help God’s people see what is true in a world full of smoke and mirrors.

The world cannot receive the Spirit because it does not know God, and it is still being deceived by the ruler of this world. Satan’s lies show up everywhere: in the stories people believe, in the things they chase, and in the promise that possessions, success, or comfort can give life. The Spirit of truth gives believers what they need to discern what is good, true, and beautiful. Ezekiel’s new covenant promise is fulfilled through Christ’s blood: God gives a new heart, puts His Spirit within His people, and causes them to walk in His ways.

Jesus also tells His disciples that they are not orphans. The Spirit is the Spirit of adoption, and His indwelling presence means that no believer faces pain, stress, sickness, family trouble, or fear alone. Christ’s comfort, however, is connected to a loving relationship with Him. Jesus repeats it plainly: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Love for Christ is not separated from obedience to Christ. Genuine faith believes Him, loves Him, follows Him, and yields to His words.

Jesus does not teach salvation by works. God’s love comes first, and love for Christ grows as the fruit of saving faith. Yet Jesus warns that disobedience is not mainly a behavior problem. Disobedience is a relationship problem. Pulling off sinful behavior without getting at the root is like pulling the flower off a dandelion while leaving the whole root in the ground. Love for Jesus is the root that produces obedience, and renewed fellowship with Jesus is where lasting change begins.

Jesus promises special comfort to those who love Him and keep His word. Every believer has the Holy Spirit, but believers do not all experience Christ’s presence in the same way at every season. Christ manifests His preciousness, sweetness, power, beauty, and worth as His people return to Him, love Him, and follow Him closely.

Jesus finally gives His own peace, not a peace that rises from easy circumstances, but peace from the Prince of Peace. Satan comes, but Satan has no claim on Christ, and because believers are in Christ, Satan has no final claim on them either. Christ’s obedience unto death, His victory over the world, and His place at the Father’s right hand secure the comfort, help, and peace His people need.
