Day 1: The Empty Suitcase and the Start of Grace

A son returns with nothing but rehearsed words, his hands empty and heart exposed. True grace meets us not when we’ve fixed ourselves, but when we’ve surrendered the illusion of control. The father’s response isn’t scrutiny or bargaining—it’s immediate, unearned embrace. Every rehearsed apology, every hidden shame, dissolves in the face of love that asks no questions. Grace begins where our self-sufficiency ends. What we call “coming home” is really letting grace close the gap. [01:02:34]

Day 5: Worth Covered, Not Proved

Trying to prove worthiness is like holding a suitcase while begging for embrace—it keeps grace at arm’s length. The feast begins when we stop auditing our failures and start accepting our seat. Sermon Summary

Luke 15 puts the father’s heart right out in the open. The son comes home with an empty suitcase, nothing to offer, nothing to leverage, and probably a rehearsed speech that he hopes might get him a place among the servants. Grace begins right there, at the place where there is nothing left to bring.

The father sees him while he is still a long way off. The father’s posture carries expectation, compassion, and readiness to receive the son who had turned his back and walked away. Psalm 103 supplies the theology behind that posture: as a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him. God does not make up compassion on the fly. God embodies the compassion Scripture has always revealed.

The father does not stop the son at the fence line, inspect the suitcase, or ask what happened to the inheritance. The father runs. In a culture where fathers did not run, the father pulls up his robe and heads down that dusty road because relationship matters more than appearances. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob looks like a Father who runs toward broken, ashamed people before they can prove a thing.

The empty suitcase has to drop before the embrace can happen. Grace does not ask what is in the suitcase before it runs toward somebody. God’s compassion meets the prodigal son and prodigal daughter right where they are, because nobody can fix themselves. Open hands receive what God gives.

The father interrupts the son’s servant speech with restoration. The robe, ring, and sandals tell everybody that the son is welcomed back as a son, as if he never left. The robe gives honor that he did not earn. The ring gives authority greater than the cash he squandered, much like Pharaoh’s ring gave Joseph real authority. The sandals give status that the son could never work his way back into.

The father replaces everything the son thought he needed in his suitcase. Independence gets replaced with the father’s robe. The inheritance gets replaced with the father’s authority. The picture of a life away from home gets replaced with sandals that say he belongs in the house. The father does it quick, and He gives the son more than he ever asked for.

The fattened calf shows that the celebration was not improvised. The father had been anticipating the day his son would come home. The suitcase no longer defines the son, because the father calls him alive, found, restored, and worth celebrating. The cross has already covered human worth, so coming home never depends on proving worthiness.
