Day 2: Riding the Wolf River of False Context

Sermon Summary

Scripture comes first as God breathed, useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training the servant of God for every good work. The word of God does not sit there for head knowledge or a bit of interesting history. Scripture is meant to get into the heart, correct what is wrong, and send the servant of God out to do what God planned.

Colossians comes as a real letter to a real church in Colossae, written by Paul from prison in Rome around AD 60. The letter belongs inside the big library of Scripture, and it speaks first to those believers in the Lycus Valley, but because it is God breathed, it is also for God's people today. The context matters, because Colossae, Laodicea, and Hierapolis sat on a trade route where all sorts of cultures, religions, philosophies, and ideas were flowing through all the time.

Paul writes because Epaphras has brought news of the church’s love, but also news that something dangerous has come in among them. The Colossian danger is not just one false idea. Christ stands both transcendent and imminent. God is above all things, outside time and space, holy, other, supreme over every throne, power, ruler, and authority. Christ is also near, “Christ in you, the hope of glory,” the Father in heaven who is also Father to His children. When God is treated as too far, people start looking for angels, gurus, ancestors, sangomas, pastors, or “men of God” to reach Him for them. When God is treated as only near, Jesus gets dragged down beside every other power and becomes buddy buddy, useful when wanted but not holy.

Christ alone is the way, the truth, and the life. Christ plus nothing, Christ plus no one, Christ alone.
