Bible Reading
Ephesians 6:10-1810. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
[36:55] 11. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
[43:17] 12. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
[01:01:38] 13. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
[01:12:34] 14. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
15. and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.
16. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.
17. and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
18. praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.
Mark 5:1-201. They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.
[48:18] 2. And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.
3. He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain,
4. for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.
5. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.
6. And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him.
7. And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”
8. For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
9. And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”
10. And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country.
11. Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside,
12. and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.”
13. So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.
14. The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened.
15. And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.
[57:46] 16. And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs.
17. And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region.
18. As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him.
19. And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
20. And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
James 4:7-87. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
[01:17:09] 8. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Observation questions
- In Ephesians 6:10-18, which repeated commands does Paul give believers, and whose strength are they told to depend on?
- What does Paul say believers are fighting against in verse 12, and what does he specifically say they are not fighting against? [01:01:38]
- In Mark 5, what details show the man’s misery before he met Jesus, and what details show the change in him after Jesus delivered him? [57:46]
- According to James 4:7-8, what three responses are believers called to make in relation to God and the devil? [01:17:09]
Interpretation questions
- Why does Paul call believers to be strong “in the Lord” rather than simply telling them to become stronger or more determined on their own? [01:14:55]
- Satan’s schemes often appear attractive, reasonable, or partly true. Why is truth mixed with error more dangerous than an obvious lie, and how can a believer test what is being offered? [01:04:03]
- The man in Mark 5 was restored to being “in his right mind.” What does this reveal about Jesus’ power to restore people whose thinking, desires, and habits have been damaged by sin? [57:46]
- James says to submit to God, resist the devil, and draw near to God. Why is submission to God necessary for genuine resistance to the devil? [01:17:09]
Application questions
- Where do you most often feel spiritually weak—perhaps in anger, fear, resentment, sexual temptation, pride, discouragement, distraction, or another area? What would it look like to bring that specific weakness into the presence of Jesus this week? [01:16:47]
- Small compromises can become repeated choices, and repeated choices can become strongholds. Is there a “small” choice, habit, relationship, or form of entertainment that may be slowly pulling your heart away from God? What is one honest step you could take before it grows deeper? [50:17]
- Prayer and Scripture are ways of drawing near to Christ, not empty religious routines. What time, place, or pattern could help you make regular time with Jesus more intentional this week? [01:00:08]
- Satan can disguise harmful influences as freedom, pleasure, success, comfort, or even spiritual truth. What influence in your life needs to be tested more carefully by Scripture instead of by popularity, appearance, or personal desire? [01:04:03]
- Jesus answered temptation with “It is written.” What Scripture could you memorize or keep visible to answer a temptation or recurring lie you commonly face? [01:14:01]
- The delivered man in Mark 5 was told to tell others how much mercy the Lord had shown him. Where might God be inviting you to speak honestly about His help, forgiveness, or restoring work in your life?
