Yom Kippur stands as a shadow, while Christ is the substance. Colossians 2 says the feasts, Sabbaths, and new moons point forward to Him, and the whole Bible tells one unified story that leads to Jesus. The Day of Atonement shows how God bridges the gap created by human sin through blood sacrifice.
The tension of already but not yet explains why a finished cross still meets a broken world. Christ has paid the debt in full, stamped the receipt with His blood, and sealed His people by the Holy Spirit. Yet creation still groans, bodies still weaken, graves still fill, and evil still tries to run wild. Romans 8 names that deep homesickness for the physical reality of God’s finished victory.
Leviticus 23 gives the blueprint through two goats. The first goat paid the legal debt through blood. The second goat, Azazel, carried the confessed sins outside the camp into the wilderness. The two goats reveal two sides of the same coin: one covers sin’s penalty, and one removes sin itself.
Christ fulfilled the first goat at Calvary when He cried, “It is finished.” Hebrews 9 shows that Jesus entered the true heavenly sanctuary with His own blood, not the blood of goats and calves. Christ now intercedes out of the world’s sight, but Hebrews also promises that He will appear a second time for salvation. The second coming will not repeat the payment for sin; it will enforce the victory already won and banish the presence of sin from the earth.
The scapegoat points toward Satan’s final eviction. Revelation 20 pictures the enemy cast away, just as Azazel was driven into the wilderness. The cross cancelled sin’s penalty, while Christ’s return will remove sin’s presence.
The old temple system also testified that the shadow had ended when the true substance arrived. The scarlet thread remained red, the favored lot turned, the temple lamp went dark, and the massive doors swung open. God tore the veil, left the house made of stone, and opened His presence to Jew and Gentile, broken and whole.
Yom Kippur calls for more than gratitude for forgiveness. The gap between the goats calls God’s people to stop coddling compromise, hiding secret sin, and carrying shame that Christ already settled. The Holy Spirit shines a flashlight into dark corners, while the authority of the cross drives sin out of the camp. The waiting room becomes a war room because the grace period remains open for sons and daughters to come home.

Key Takeaways
- 1. The debt is already paid [00:17:17] Christ’s cry, “It is finished,” means the legal transaction is settled forever. Shame cannot improve on His blood, and religious performance cannot add to His purchase. The Holy Spirit stands as God’s nonrefundable down payment that the One who paid for His people will return to claim them fully. [17:17]
- 2. Live in the gap between goats [00:18:26] The first goat pictures forgiveness, while the second pictures sin being driven out. Grace does not leave sin comfortably sitting in the camp under a religious label. Christ’s atonement gives both cleansing from guilt and authority for a real break with compromise. [18:26]
- 3. Christ will enforce Calvary’s victory [00:20:26] The second coming is not Christ coming back to try again. Christ returns to execute the eviction notice already written against Satan and sin. Creation’s groaning will end when the legal victory becomes visible, physical reality. [20:26]
- 4. The waiting room is a war room [00:40:18] God’s delay is mercy, not forgetfulness. The open door creates time for the broken, the lost, and the spiritually asleep to hear that their debt has been paid. The church’s calling in this gap is to carry the authority and compassion of Christ into dark places.
