Pressing On by Striving Side by Side

Paul begins with the real struggle of living faithfully. The struggle is not just getting through a hard day, fitting everything on the calendar, or waking up at two in the morning and wondering what in the world is going on. The struggle is pressing on in faith when life stirs itself up and carries people along.

Paul writes to the Philippian church from prison, not from some comfortable place where his words cost him nothing. His question about living and dying comes out of that personal plight. Paul knows that being with Christ would be gain, yet he chooses to continue living because fellowship with Christ means service to others. Christ’s life becomes the pattern: others’ interests come before personal interests, and life is given so that others might live.

The church’s witness, then, is not built first on a bankroll, a music program, or even a growing crowd. The life God has given is the sure thing available to offer others. Paul’s call to “live your life” sounds simple, but the struggle often keeps people from striving side by side. Individual Christianity may feel easier, but it cannot fully show the united witness Christ calls forth.

The public life of the church reveals something to those who cannot see all the tensions, disagreements, tiredness, and private struggles underneath. The question is whether what others see comes from a real life with Christ. Christlikeness must grow in the hidden places and then show itself when God’s people gather, work, serve, laugh, sweat, and welcome others.

Paul calls the church to live in a worthy manner with one mind, one spirit, and courage. The mind is the mind of Christ. The spirit is the unity Christ creates. Courage means bringing the best self into what God has set before the church, even when the work is hot, inconvenient, stinky, tiring, or uncertain.

Suffering is not a failure of faithful living. Paul joins believing and suffering together, because Christ’s people are called to take up the cause and bear witness together. Pressing on is not optional, because God keeps calling His people onward. Striving side by side is the choice: hand in hand, arm in arm, setting self aside, building up the body, and giving God the glory through lives that make Christ known.
