Bible readingRevelation 4:1–11 (ESV)After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in the spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God, and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal.
And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like a eagle in flight. And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
Revelation 21:1–5 (ESV)Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
Observation questions- In Revelation 4, what specific images and gemstones are used to describe the appearance of the one sitting on the throne and the atmosphere surrounding it?
- According to Revelation 21:3-4, what are the specific things that will no longer exist when God’s dwelling place is fully among His people?
- How is the figure of "Babylon" described in terms of her clothing, her wealth, and her impact on the "holy people" of God? [08:10]
- What does the image of the "Lamb looking as if it had been slain" signify regarding his power and his past action on behalf of people from every nation? [17:13]
Interpretation questions- The throne is the most dominant image in Revelation, mentioned 47 times. [15:08] Why is the image of an "occupied throne" so central to providing hope when the world feels like it is spinning out of control?
- The "sea of glass" in Revelation 4:6 is described as clear as crystal. Given that the sea often symbolized chaos and evil to the people of that time, what does its stillness before the throne suggest about God’s authority over the things that scare us? [18:04]
- Babylon is personified as a glittering prostitute to show how beauty can mask an "ugly underside" of selfishness and violence. [09:18] How does this imagery help us discern the spiritual reality behind modern systems of wealth, materialism, and power?
- In Revelation 21, the "new Jerusalem" comes down from heaven to earth. [34:20] What does this imply about the nature of our eternal future—is it an escape from the world, or a physical restoration of it?
Application questions- It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the news or the "political, economic, and social realities" of our day. [02:49] When you look at the world right now, do you find yourself more prone to fear or to hope? How might putting on "revelation glasses" change your perspective this week?
- Evil often "wraps itself in beauty" to make sin look attractive. [11:15] In what areas of your life—perhaps in your career, your spending, or your entertainment—do you feel the "seduction" of the world's values pulling you away from a simple love for God?
- Our true struggle is not against "flesh and blood" but against spiritual forces of evil. [21:13] How does knowing that your enemy is spiritual change the way you respond to people who irritate you or to the injustices you see in the world?
- Like Esther, every believer is placed in their specific family, workplace, and neighborhood "for such a time as this." [29:49] Where has God strategically placed you right now, and what "kingdom work" might He be calling you to do in that space? [30:56]
- Prayer is described as "incense" kept in golden bowls before God. [26:02] Do you truly believe your prayers are a "treasured aroma" to Him? How would that reality change the way you approach your time of prayer during a difficult or "seemingly hopeless" season? [26:48]
- The promise of a new earth where there is "no more death or mourning or crying or pain" is meant to be our secure future. [34:20] How can holding onto this specific promise help you persevere through a current hardship or a physical struggle you are facing today?
- We are "stronger together" and harder for the enemy to defeat when we are in community. [27:23] Have you felt tempted lately to isolate yourself or to let "seeds of disunity" grow between you and another believer? [28:07] How can you move toward fellowship this week?
