Preparing the Way: The Call to Repentance
Summary
In today's gathering, we explored the profound significance of heralding the arrival of Jesus Christ, as depicted in Matthew chapter 3. This chapter marks a pivotal moment where Jesus, now an adult, steps onto the scene, and John the Baptist plays a crucial role in preparing the way for Him. John's ministry is characterized by a call to repentance, a theme that resonates deeply throughout the passage. Repentance is not merely an outward act but a transformation of the heart, a turning away from sin and towards God. John the Baptist, despite his humble appearance and unconventional lifestyle, drew crowds from Jerusalem and Judea, emphasizing the urgency and importance of repentance in anticipation of the coming King.
John's baptism was a baptism of repentance, distinct from the baptism of faith that Jesus would later institute. It was a call for the people to prepare their hearts for the arrival of the Messiah. The Pharisees and Sadducees, religious leaders of the time, approached John for baptism, but he saw through their lack of genuine repentance. He challenged them to bear fruit in keeping with repentance, highlighting that true repentance is evidenced by a transformed life.
The baptism of Jesus by John is a significant event, marked by the triune affirmation of Jesus' identity. As Jesus emerged from the water, the heavens opened, the Spirit of God descended like a dove, and the Father's voice declared, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." This moment underscores the divine nature of Jesus and the unity of the Trinity in His mission. Jesus' baptism was not for repentance but to fulfill all righteousness, identifying with humanity and foreshadowing His role as the Savior.
As followers of Christ, we are called to be heralds of the King, proclaiming the message of repentance and the lordship of Jesus. Our proclamation must be rooted in the truth of who Jesus is—the eternal Son of God, worthy of our worship and the only way to salvation. In our ministry, we must prioritize pointing others to Jesus, just as John did, and trust in God's pleasure and affirmation, not in worldly measures of success.

Day 1: Repentance as Heart Transformation
True repentance is a profound transformation of the heart, not merely an outward act. It involves turning away from sin and moving towards God, resulting in a life that bears fruit in keeping with repentance. This transformation is essential for entering the Kingdom of God, as it signifies a genuine change in one's relationship with God. The call to repentance is urgent and necessary, as it prepares the heart for the coming of the Messiah. John the Baptist emphasized this need for repentance, urging people to align their lives with God's will. [34:04]
Ezekiel 18:31-32 (ESV): "Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord God; so turn, and live."
Reflection: What specific sin or habit do you need to turn away from today to experience a deeper transformation of your heart?
Day 2: The Role of John the Baptist
John the Baptist's ministry was pivotal in preparing the way for Jesus. His message of repentance was urgent, calling people to turn to God in anticipation of the Messiah's arrival. Despite his humble appearance and unconventional lifestyle, John drew crowds from Jerusalem and Judea, emphasizing the importance of repentance. He challenged the religious leaders of the time, the Pharisees and Sadducees, to demonstrate genuine repentance through transformed lives. John's role as a herald was to point others to Jesus, preparing their hearts for His coming. [36:36]
Isaiah 40:3-5 (ESV): "A voice cries: 'In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.'"
Reflection: How can you prepare the way for Jesus in your own life and in the lives of those around you today?
Day 3: Triune Affirmation of Jesus' Identity
The baptism of Jesus is a significant event that marks the affirmation of His divine identity by the Trinity. As Jesus emerged from the water, the heavens opened, the Spirit of God descended like a dove, and the Father's voice declared, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." This moment underscores the unity and purpose of the Godhead in the work of salvation. It confirms Jesus' identity as the eternal Son of God and His mission to bring salvation to humanity. The triune affirmation highlights the divine nature of Jesus and the unity of the Trinity in His mission. [01:05:27]
Colossians 1:19-20 (ESV): "For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross."

Day 5: Heralding the King
As followers of Christ, we are called to be heralds of the King, proclaiming the message of repentance and the lordship of Jesus. Our focus should be on pointing others to Jesus, trusting in God's affirmation rather than worldly success. This calling involves living a life that reflects the truth of who Jesus is—the eternal Son of God, worthy of our worship and the only way to salvation. By prioritizing the proclamation of Jesus' lordship, we fulfill our role as His ambassadors, sharing the hope and salvation found in Him with others. [01:12:45]
2 Corinthians 5:20 (ESV): "Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God."

Quotes
Repentance is required in heralding the king. These first six verses focus in on the life and ministry, of the one who is preparing the way, John the Baptist's ministry. [00:34:04]
Notice what he was also doing. He was preaching. One scholar pointed this out about this word, this word preaching. The word preaching here is, it means to make known by a herald. It indicates that a message, the message is given by authority to the proclaimer. It's not a free composition of his own. [00:36:03]
John tells them to bear fruit in keeping with repentance. He tells them that what's necessary is not this outward action, but your heart is at play here. Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. One scholar said it's significant that John here only speaks of singular fruit. [00:49:38]
Every single human being needs to repent before Almighty God. In verse 10, John says this, Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree, therefore, that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. For John, the way to have a right standing before God starts with genuine repentance. [00:51:21]
John's goal of his ministry is to point away from himself and point to Jesus. He's content to send his crowds away from him the moment that Jesus arrives on stage. [00:53:48]
Jesus could have been next to John calling on other people to repent, but instead he stands among those that needed repentance and identifies himself as one of them, as a fitting representative on their behalf. Jesus, this is dedicated to the mission of making sinners righteous. [01:03:01]
When Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, by the way, he came up out of the water in order to come up out of the water. You have to have been down in the water, right? It makes sense. Jesus was baptized by immersion. Let's just leave that there. [01:04:09]
Jesus, the eternal son of God was in the water. The Holy Spirit comes down and the father speaks the entire Trinity shows up at this moment. Father, son, and Holy Spirit. [01:05:14]
The father's affirmation would be confirmation for all present that Jesus is no mere human. But the son of God in human flesh. Jesus is the son in whom the father is pleased from Psalm chapter two and verse seven, the suffering servant upon whom he placed the Holy Spirit from Isaiah 42 verse one. [01:06:04]
God's pleasure in you as you serve him is not based on how many people show up. It's not based on how many people follow you. It's not based on how big budgets are. It's based on God the Father's proclamation that he is pleased with you. [01:10:20]
Christian, as you herald King Jesus, do you leave out the fact that Jesus is God? Or do we treat Jesus as if he's just a really good guy who shows us the way to be nice to other people? [01:11:51]
Christian, hear John herald the King. The Trinity heralds the King. Will you be a herald of the King? [01:12:45]
