Preparing the Way: Embracing Repentance and Humility
Summary
In today's message, we explored the theme of "preparing the way," focusing on the role of John the Baptist as the forerunner to Jesus Christ. John was sent to prepare the hearts of the people for the coming Messiah, fulfilling the prophecy in Isaiah 40. His message was one of repentance, urging people to turn away from sin and towards God. This preparation was not just spiritual but also practical, as seen in the historical context of preparing roads for a king's arrival. Similarly, John prepared the spiritual path for Jesus by calling people to repentance and baptism.
We also delved into the importance of personal preparation in our own lives. Just as John prepared the way for Jesus, we are called to prepare our hearts and lives to receive God's message. This involves removing obstacles of sin and striving to live according to God's will. The parable of the two gardeners illustrated the necessity of preparation and effort to achieve fruitful results. In our spiritual lives, this means investing time and energy into our relationship with God, through prayer, study, and living out our faith.
Furthermore, we discussed the role of humility and perspective in our personal journeys. My own experiences, from working as a custodian to a prison guard, taught me valuable lessons in humility and patience, preparing me for my current role in ministry. These experiences remind us that God uses various circumstances to shape and prepare us for His purposes.
Finally, we considered how we can participate in preparing the way for others to receive the gospel. This involves living lives that reflect Christ's love and being ready to share our faith with gentleness and respect. By removing the "planks" from our own eyes and living out the principles of scripture, we can be effective witnesses for God's kingdom.

Devotional
Day 1: Preparing the Heart for the Messiah
John the Baptist's mission was to prepare the way for Jesus by calling people to repentance. His life and message remind us of the importance of spiritual preparation and the need to turn away from sin to receive God's grace. John’s role was not just a historical event but a spiritual principle that applies to us today. He called people to repentance, urging them to turn away from sin and towards God, fulfilling the prophecy in Isaiah 40. This preparation was both spiritual and practical, as seen in the historical context of preparing roads for a king's arrival. Similarly, John prepared the spiritual path for Jesus by calling people to repentance and baptism. [01:23]
Isaiah 40:3-5 (ESV): "A voice cries: 'In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.'"
Reflection: What specific sins or distractions are currently hindering your relationship with God, and how can you begin to address them today to prepare your heart for His presence?
Day 2: Cultivating a Heart Ready for God's Work
Just as roads were prepared for a king's arrival, we must prepare our hearts for God's work. This involves removing obstacles of sin and striving to live according to God's will, much like the gardener who carefully prepares the soil for planting. The parable of the two gardeners illustrates the necessity of preparation and effort to achieve fruitful results. In our spiritual lives, this means investing time and energy into our relationship with God, through prayer, study, and living out our faith. [05:25]
Hosea 10:12 (ESV): "Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you."
Reflection: What practical steps can you take this week to "break up the fallow ground" in your life, making room for God to work more deeply in you?
Day 3: Embracing Humility and Patience
Personal experiences, such as working in humble or challenging roles, teach us valuable lessons in humility and patience. These experiences prepare us for greater responsibilities and remind us that God uses all circumstances for His purposes. The speaker shared personal stories of working as a custodian and a prison guard, which taught him humility and patience, preparing him for his current role in ministry. These experiences remind us that God uses various circumstances to shape and prepare us for His purposes. [11:42]
1 Peter 5:6-7 (ESV): "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you."
Reflection: Reflect on a challenging experience in your life. How might God be using it to teach you humility and prepare you for future responsibilities?
Day 4: Engaging in Compassionate Evangelism
Effective evangelism involves engaging others with compassion and respect, rather than forceful or judgmental approaches. By living out our faith and sharing the gospel with gentleness, we can prepare the way for others to receive God's message. This involves living lives that reflect Christ's love and being ready to share our faith with gentleness and respect. By removing the "planks" from our own eyes and living out the principles of scripture, we can be effective witnesses for God's kingdom. [14:27]
Colossians 4:5-6 (ESV): "Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person."
Reflection: Who in your life might be open to hearing about your faith? How can you approach them with love and respect, sharing your beliefs in a way that reflects Christ's compassion?
Day 5: Living as Witnesses for Christ
To be effective witnesses, we must live lives that reflect Christ's love and remove any hindrances in our relationship with God. By embodying the principles of scripture and sharing our faith, we can lead others to Christ. This involves living out our faith authentically and being ready to share the gospel with gentleness and respect. By removing the "planks" from our own eyes and living out the principles of scripture, we can be effective witnesses for God's kingdom. [17:13]
Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV): "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
Reflection: In what ways can you let your light shine more brightly in your community, demonstrating Christ's love through your actions and words?
Quotes
Now John the Baptist was sent ahead of Jesus. He arrived about six months before Jesus got here. His life purpose was to prepare the way for the coming Messiah. There's even a prophecy concerning John in our Old Testament reading for today. That is in Isaiah 40 verses 1 through 5. [00:00:19] (24 seconds)
In those days, John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, repent for the kingdom of heaven is near. This is he who is spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, a voice of one calling in the wilderness, prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight paths for him. [00:02:05] (20 seconds)
John was sent to prepare the way for Jesus. He was sent to prepare the way with a message of repentance that is turning your hearts away from your sin and towards God. Removing obstacles of sin and the hopelessness of striving for trying to keep the law perfectly to prepare the hearts of the people for the one who did come and keep the law perfectly. [00:04:54] (27 seconds)
The man's neighbor had a similar thought. Of. Feeding his family off of the land. So he got a pencil and paper. paper and drew out what he had planned he tilled the ground removed the rocks and the weeds he fertilized the soil made rows and labeled them then he planted his seeds he watered watched and waited days and then weeks and he saw tender shoots coming out of the ground before he knew it he was harvesting a hundred times what had been sown now as I was writing this and thinking about this I'm sure that there's more than just me in here that likes to garden every once in a while anybody okay we got a couple gardeners in here does anybody annoyed at the first man who just threw the seeds in the yard yeah okay where's the preparation yeah you got to do some stuff to make this that these things work you see a lot of times people they want to get the results and without the preparation they want to get the results without putting in the effort um with my lung capacity I was kind of second guessing whether or not I want to do this but I want to give the example here can you still hear me with this on okay good so I was thinking about this I'm going to give you guys the gift of a perfect push -up all right now hold yourselves back now all right [00:05:32] (95 seconds)
So on a personal note of preparation, God was preparing me. God had a lot of work to do in me to get me ready to return to ministry. You see, I got my degree in theology back in 2012, and I had around about 13 years of youth ministry experience. And I thought, wow, now is my time to shine. [00:09:53] (24 seconds)
And God had a different thought. He said, you know what? Your first job is going to be a custodian over at Camp Timberley. I was like, oh, so I get to mop floors and scrub toilets now? And I wasn't ready for that, but I needed to be. You see, we want the result. Without the effort, right? [00:10:22] (27 seconds)
And so something that I needed to learn there was how to be humble. And nothing humbles you like being a custodian at a camp. All right? Now, it took a little while, a couple years, but I had mastered the art of being humble. And I got a number of awards for being the most humble. [00:10:49] (22 seconds)
So, God has used a plethora or a great variety of experiences to prepare me for right where I am today. The next part of the message has to do with us. Participating in preparing the way for the Lord. I've seen some people use what I'll call turn or burn evangelism. [00:13:01] (24 seconds)
They engage people in conversation. They lay the groundwork. They prepare the way for the listener to hear the gospel as clearly as possible. Sometimes they just begin with a simple question. Like, what do you think happens after we die? Is this all that there is? And they would listen and talk. [00:13:50] (23 seconds)
We must remove the plank of sin from our own eyes before we can see clearly to help our neighbors. We must live such good lives among the unbelievers that though they may accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your good deeds and glorify God. Our love, our testimony, how we display the fruit of the spirit. [00:15:31] (26 seconds)
In order for us to be effective for the kingdom of God, we must love the word of God. We must learn it and spend time meditating on it. We also must be living examples of the principles in scripture. You know, love God, love people. We also ought to share the word of God. [00:16:10] (20 seconds)
Do you have anything that is, is kind of a stumbling block or a rock or a pothole in your path on your way to the Lord? the lord rest assured let me tell you that jesus doesn't come into your life with a white silk glove to judge how well you've cleaned up he shows up with a broom dustpan a mop and he says let's get to work he meets us right where we're at um he steps in where we are and he helps us to get right john the baptist came to prepare the hearts for the lord and for each of us we are called to participate in this process we are given the great commission by jesus in matthew chapter 28 um some of us it's our job to remove obstacles by living a good and faithful life um what i mean by that is there are some people who are like you know this jesus is interesting but these christians make it hard for me to commit so if we live a good and godly life and we share the love of christ then we will not be a stumbling block um another part is we get to participate in planting seeds of faith seeds of the gospel some of us water and nurture these seeds and some of us are privileged enough to see the fruit if you guys wouldn't mind praying with me dear lord jesus i ask you to give us the strength and the courage to be a part of the process lord use us as ambassadors to draw people closer to you in a trusting and a loving relationship lord help me not to be a stumbling block but help me to be a shining light that leads others to you here i am lord send me in jesus name amen [00:17:28] (125 seconds)
