Preparing Our Hearts for Christ's Reign
Summary
In today's reflection, we explored the profound call to prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus, drawing inspiration from the Gospel of Luke and the message of John the Baptist. The essence of this preparation lies in examining the throne of our hearts and ensuring that Jesus is the sole occupant. Often, we allow various aspects of our lives—be it family, work, or personal interests—to take precedence over our relationship with Christ. However, true faith requires us to dethrone these elements and invite Jesus to reign supreme. This act of surrender is not about diminishing the importance of our loved ones or responsibilities but about prioritizing our spiritual journey and allowing Jesus to guide us in all aspects of life.
Prayer emerges as the key to unlocking this spiritual transformation. It is not merely about increasing the quantity of our prayers but cultivating a genuine desire to connect with God. This desire should become an unquenchable thirst, driving us to seek His presence continually. In prayer, we are encouraged to be authentic, to pour out our hearts, and to listen for God's response, whether it comes as a voice, a feeling of peace, or a sense of joy. The practice of prayer is not about perfection but about being present with God, allowing Him to work within us and transform our lives.
As we engage in prayer, we are reminded that distractions are natural. The key is to refocus our attention on God, trusting that He values our time and effort. By setting aside dedicated moments for prayer, we create a space for God to fill our hearts with His grace and wisdom. Through this process, we begin to see the world through the eyes of faith, perceiving the supernatural in the ordinary and experiencing the joy and peace that only God can provide.

Day 1: Dethroning the Heart for Christ
To truly embrace faith, one must examine the throne of their heart and ensure that Jesus is the sole occupant. This involves a conscious effort to prioritize the relationship with Christ above all else, allowing Him to guide decisions and actions. Often, various aspects of life, such as family, work, or personal interests, can inadvertently take precedence over one's spiritual journey. However, the call is not to diminish the importance of these elements but to invite Jesus to reign supreme, ensuring that every aspect of life is aligned with His will. This act of surrender is a profound step in spiritual growth, as it opens the heart to receive the fullness of God's grace and wisdom. [20:03]
"Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life." (Proverbs 4:23, ESV)
Reflection: What is currently occupying the throne of your heart, and how can you consciously make room for Jesus to take His rightful place today?
Day 2: Cultivating a Thirst for Prayer
True prayer begins with a desire that becomes an unquenchable thirst for God's presence. This desire is not something that can be manufactured but is a gift that can be nurtured by asking Jesus to increase it within us. As this thirst grows, prayer becomes a natural and fulfilling part of daily life, aligning the heart with God's will. It is not about the quantity of prayers but the quality of the connection with God. By seeking His presence continually, one can experience a deeper relationship with Him, marked by peace and joy that surpasses understanding. [23:43]
"O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water." (Psalm 63:1, ESV)
Reflection: How can you cultivate a deeper thirst for God's presence in your daily routine, and what practical steps can you take to seek Him more earnestly?
Day 3: Authenticity in Prayer
Prayer is about being genuine with God, sharing the deepest thoughts and concerns, and listening for His response. It is not about saying the right words but about being present and open to His guidance and love. In prayer, authenticity is key, as it allows for a true connection with God, where one can pour out their heart and be vulnerable. This openness invites God to work within, transforming lives and aligning them with His purpose. By being authentic in prayer, one can experience a profound sense of peace and joy, knowing that they are fully known and loved by God. [28:15]
"Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us." (Psalm 62:8, ESV)
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you find it difficult to be authentic with God, and how can you begin to open up to Him more fully in prayer today?

By dedicating specific times for prayer, one creates a sacred space for God to work in their life, transforming their heart and mind. It is important to recognize that distractions do not diminish the value of prayer but are opportunities to practice refocusing on God. By setting aside dedicated moments for prayer, one can create an environment where God's grace and wisdom can fill their heart, allowing them to see the world through the eyes of faith. [30:44]
"But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you." (Matthew 6:6, ESV)

This transformation allows them to navigate life's challenges with grace and confidence, knowing that they are guided by God's wisdom and love. Prayer becomes a powerful tool for spiritual growth, as it opens the heart to receive God's grace and aligns one's life with His purpose. Quotes
Last week, Father Browning proclaimed to us the grace that Jesus wants to give to us, as a parish, which is the gift of a deepening of our faith. A deepening of our faith. And so then the question becomes, well, if God wants to give it, how do I respond? How do I partner up with him so that I can receive that grace? [00:19:52] (25 seconds)
And it's like, well, if I have a throne upon my heart, and that throne was made for one, who is Jesus, I have to look at what is upon the throne, the throne of my heart, that doesn't belong there. I have to let Jesus take possession of that throne, and he has to dethrone the things that have taken their seat upon that throne. Amen? I have to let Jesus be the Lord of my life. [00:20:17] (29 seconds)
We have to give Jesus permission to move off of the throne of our heart because we're comfortable with whatever's sitting there. If it's my sports, my children's sports, and that takes precedence over my life, then I let that sit there. If it's my politics, I let that sit there. If it's my family, sometimes our family is upon the throne of our heart, and that was made for Jesus and him alone. Amen? [00:21:05] (25 seconds)
That he, once he says this, right? Seek first the kingdom, and everything else will be given to you. That includes your family. That includes your relationships. That includes your friendships. But if they are more important, if your job is more important than Jesus Christ, and that is what's sitting upon the throne of your heart, then you won't be able to receive the gift of faith that he wants to give you. [00:21:44] (25 seconds)
And so we have to ask the question, because John the Baptist proposes this to us. He makes a declaration, and he says, Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight his paths. So how do we make straight the paths of the Lord? How do I, in 2024, he already came, he already was born into Bethlehem, so how do I make straight the path of the Lord? How do I prepare for him to come? [00:22:47] (30 seconds)
We got to create this path for the Lord. Well, how do I do that? And the key is prayer. Everybody say prayer. Yeah, it's the key. It's the key to God's heart. But I don't, what I'm not going to suggest, what I'm not going to suggest is that you just go and say, I need to pray more. [00:23:30] (20 seconds)
But we have to ask the Lord, just as we ask the Lord every week through the Kerygma, for the grace of the week, we have to keep asking the Lord for what we need. And so pray this prayer with me. Say, Jesus, increase in me a desire to pray. Amen. We have to ask Jesus for the desire to pray. [00:23:51] (28 seconds)
Because if I go and pray, I want to pray, but other things, the things on my heart, those things on the throne of my heart, they take precedence. So I want to pray, but I just don't have time, Father. I want to pray, but my kids' things are really important. I want to pray, but I have a job thing. I want to, but I don't. Why? Because I don't desire it. I want it, but I don't desire it. [00:24:18] (25 seconds)
That's the sort of, we won't say formula, but it's the steps for us. Lord, increase my desire to pray. Now I'm going to take a step toward you. Right? We make a prayer, we throw a prayer up to the Lord, and then we start to walk. And though we may think we're walking, we're meeting him halfway, it's not true. We go like .0000001 of the way, and he comes the rest of the 99 .99999%. Amen? [00:25:54] (29 seconds)
So when I go into prayer, what do I do? I go in, set my timer, and then I'm just there. I can let my thoughts, the things that I have in my life, kind of well up in me. What's the thing that comes up most? Maybe it's my meeting I have on Wednesday, okay? I let that come up in me, and I share that with Jesus, because I've been sharing it with everybody else, I just haven't shared it with the Lord. [00:27:57] (30 seconds)
And as I allow that thing to well up within me, I kind of pour it out to him, and then I'm just still, and I wait for him to speak back. Now sometimes we'll hear audible voice, internal voice, sometimes I'll just get a feeling of peace, like everything's going to be okay. Sometimes I'm just going to feel like, I'm going to feel joyful. [00:28:27] (28 seconds)
When I find myself distracted, I just go back to the Lord. Oh, I get distracted. Is he like, how dare you be distracted right now? Nope. You know why? Because I gave him those 10 or 15 minutes. I set my alarm. When those 15 minutes are over, that alarm will go off. And then I can say, I can pray a glory B. I just close off with a glory B, or a thank you, Jesus. And then I go about my day. [00:31:04] (29 seconds)
