Small Group Bible Study Guide: Faithfulness, Humility, and God’s Work in Ministry (Based on Acts 18:18-28 and the sermon summary above)
Bible ReadingActs 18:18-28 (ESV)> 18 After this, Paul stayed many days longer and then took leave of the brothers and set sail for Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchreae he had cut his hair, for he was under a vow.
> 19 And they came to Ephesus, and he left them there, but he himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews.
> 20 When they asked him to stay for a longer period, he declined.
> 21 But on taking leave of them he said, “I will return to you if God wills,” and he set sail from Ephesus.
> 22 When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch.
> 23 After spending some time there, he departed and went from one place to the next through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
> 24 Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures.
> 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.
> 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.
> 27 And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed,
> 28 for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus.
Observation Questions- What reasons did Paul have for leaving Ephesus quickly, even though there was an open door for ministry there? ([49:33])
- How did Priscilla and Aquila respond when they heard Apollos teaching with an incomplete understanding of the gospel? ([01:11:04])
- What qualities are highlighted about Apollos in this passage, and how did he respond to correction? ([01:19:26])
- According to the sermon, what was Paul’s attitude toward the results of his ministry in Ephesus? ([53:17])
Interpretation Questions- Why do you think Paul was able to leave such a strategic city as Ephesus, trusting God with the results, instead of staying to ensure the ministry’s success? What does this reveal about his view of God’s sovereignty? ([49:33])
- What can we learn from Priscilla and Aquila’s approach to correcting Apollos? How does their example challenge the way we give or receive correction in the church? ([01:11:04])
- The sermon emphasized that “the church and its ministries are not ours to possess or control.” What are some dangers of thinking ministry depends on us, and how does this passage correct that thinking? ([01:24:17])
- Apollos was already “mighty in the Scriptures” but still needed to learn. What does this teach us about spiritual growth and humility, even for those who are already knowledgeable or experienced? ([01:19:26])
Application Questions- The sermon said that true ministry flows from gratitude and awe at God’s holiness and grace, not from obligation or pride. When you serve—whether in church, at home, or in the community—what motivates you most? How can you cultivate a heart of worship in your service? ([19:49])
- Paul submitted his plans to God’s will, even when it meant leaving a “golden opportunity” behind. Is there an area in your life or ministry where you struggle to let go of control and trust God with the outcome? What would it look like to surrender that to Him this week? ([49:33])
- The results of our evangelism and discipleship are ultimately in God’s hands. Have you ever felt discouraged by a lack of visible fruit in your efforts? How can remembering God’s role in growth free you from anxiety or pride? ([53:17])
- Apollos received correction with humility, even though he was already a gifted teacher. When was the last time you received correction or feedback about your faith or ministry? How did you respond, and what might help you be more teachable? ([01:19:26])
- Priscilla and Aquila corrected Apollos privately and gently. Think of a time when you needed to correct or encourage someone in their faith. How can you do this with humility and love, following their example? ([01:11:04])
- The sermon reminded us that God raises up new servants in every generation, and the advance of the gospel does not depend on any one person or program. Are there ways you have made ministry about yourself or your preferences? How can you shift your focus to God’s glory and purposes? ([01:24:17])
- What is one practical step you can take this week to be a faithful, humble, and teachable servant in your family, workplace, or church? ([01:24:17])
Let’s pray that God would help us to serve with gratitude, humility, and trust in His sovereign work—both in us and through us.
