Preparedness for the End Times: Warnings and Promises
Devotional
Day 1: Historical Precedents of Divine Judgment
In the scriptures, the days of Noah and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah serve as powerful reminders of God's judgment on rampant wickedness. These events highlight the severe consequences of turning away from God's commandments and the importance of living righteously in a world ripe for judgment. The world today mirrors these times, with widespread moral decay and wickedness, signaling that we are indeed living in the last days. As believers, we are called to reflect on these historical precedents and examine our own lives to ensure we are aligned with God's will. [10:07]
Genesis 6:5-7 (ESV): "The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the Lord said, 'I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.'"
Reflection: Consider an area in your life where you may be turning away from God's commandments. What steps can you take today to realign with His will and live righteously?
Day 2: The Promise of Deliverance
The Church of Philadelphia is promised deliverance from the hour of trial, symbolizing hope for all who remain faithful. This promise underscores the importance of keeping God's word and being steadfast in faith amidst tribulation. In a world filled with challenges and trials, believers are encouraged to hold fast to their faith, knowing that God's promises are true and that deliverance is assured for those who remain faithful. This assurance provides hope and strength to persevere through difficult times. [25:29]
Revelation 3:10 (ESV): "Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth."
Reflection: Reflect on a current trial you are facing. How can you actively keep God's word and remain steadfast in your faith during this time?
Day 3: Distinction Between Tribulations
The tribulation faced by the church, often from the enemy, differs from the Great Tribulation, which is God's judgment on the wicked. Understanding this distinction helps believers prepare spiritually for the end times. While the church may endure trials and persecution, the Great Tribulation is a time of God's wrath against the wicked. This understanding encourages believers to focus on spiritual readiness and to trust in God's ultimate plan and justice. [28:43]
Matthew 24:21-22 (ESV): "For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short."
Reflection: How can you prepare spiritually for the trials you may face, distinguishing between everyday challenges and the greater tribulation to come?
Day 4: Vigilance and Readiness
Jesus' instruction to watch and pray emphasizes the need for spiritual vigilance. Being prepared for the Lord's return involves not being consumed by worldly cares but focusing on spiritual readiness. In a world filled with distractions, believers are called to remain vigilant and prayerful, ensuring that their lives are aligned with God's purposes. This vigilance is crucial in maintaining a strong faith and being ready for the Lord's return. [33:17]
Luke 21:34-36 (ESV): "But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."
Reflection: What worldly cares are currently weighing you down? How can you shift your focus to spiritual readiness and vigilance today?
Day 5: Signs of the Times
The signs of the second coming are evident, urging believers to look up and lift their heads, for redemption is near. This awareness prompts self-reflection on readiness and encourages seeking assurance in faith. As believers observe the signs of the times, they are reminded of the urgency of spiritual preparation and the hope of redemption. This awareness should lead to a deeper commitment to living a life that honors God and anticipates His return. [38:10]
1 Thessalonians 5:2-4 (ESV): "For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, 'There is peace and security,' then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief."
Reflection: What signs of the times do you see around you? How can you use this awareness to deepen your faith and readiness for the Lord's return?
Sermon Summary
In today's reflection, we explored the profound warnings and promises found in the scriptures concerning the end times and God's judgment. We began by examining the prophetic words of Jesus, who spoke of a time when the world would be ripe for judgment, much like in the days of Noah and Sodom and Gomorrah. These historical events serve as stark reminders of God's righteousness and the consequences of turning away from His commandments. The world today mirrors these times, with rampant wickedness and moral decay, signaling that we are indeed living in the last days.
The Book of Revelation provides a vivid depiction of the coming tribulation, a period of unparalleled judgment upon the earth. This time, known by various names such as the Great Tribulation and the Day of the Lord's Vengeance, will be marked by God's wrath against the wicked. However, there is hope for those who remain faithful. The Church of Philadelphia, representing the true church, is promised deliverance from this hour of trial. This promise extends to all who keep the word of His patience and remain steadfast in their faith.
We are reminded of the importance of vigilance and prayer, as Jesus instructed His disciples to watch and pray always, so they may be accounted worthy to escape the coming tribulation and stand before the Son of Man. The distinction between the tribulation faced by the church and the Great Tribulation is crucial. While the church may endure trials and persecution from the enemy, the Great Tribulation is God's judgment upon the wicked.
As we navigate these challenging times, we must ensure that our lives are not consumed by the cares of this world, but rather focused on spiritual readiness. The signs of the times are evident, and as we see these signs, we are encouraged to look up and lift our heads, for our redemption draws near. The question remains: Are we ready? Preparation is essential, and we are urged to seek assurance and readiness for the Lord's return.

Sermon Clips
And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, lift up your heads for your Redemption draweth nigh. When they now shoot forth, you see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at end. Verily I say unto you, this generation shall not pass away till all be fulfilled. [00:03:57]
Watch ye therefore and pray always that you may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass and to stand before the Son of Man. And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple to hear him. [00:04:53]
Because you have kept the word of my patience, I also will keep you from the hour of temptation which shall come upon all the world to try them that dwell upon the earth. As we look at the world today, it is certainly ripe for judgment. [00:07:22]
It should be noted that God in past history has moved in and brought his judgment upon the world and upon various cities and upon even his people of Israel. We read concerning the days of the time of Noah when God judged the earth and destroyed the inhabitants on the face of the earth. [00:08:19]
The wickedness of man was great upon the earth that the imagination of man's heart was only evil continually, that the earth was corrupt and that the earth was filled with violence. And thus God said my spirit will not always strive with man. [00:09:12]
God said I will destroy man from the face of the earth. I will bring a flood of water and destroy all flesh. And so we read and all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both a fowl of cattle of beasts and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth and every man. [00:10:48]
The judgment of God destroyed the people that existed before the flood. We see God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and we look at the events that provoked the judgment of God upon Sodom. We read and the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked that their sin was very Grievous. [00:11:42]
God has judged in the past and the world is again right for judgment. God has promised that his judgment is going to come in the last days. There will be a period of three and a half years in which the world will see a greater judgment of God upon the whole earth than at any time in the history of man. [00:20:01]
The majority of the book of Revelation is devoted to describing in detail the judgments of God that are going to come upon the earth. As soon as we get to chapter 6, when the Lord begins to open the seven seals of that are sealing the scroll, we will enter into this period of judgment. [00:20:57]
The tribulation that we experience has many forms, sometimes ridicule, sometimes scorn, mockery when people say you don't really believe that stuff about the Bible, do you? Oh come on, you know we've advanced and intellectually far beyond that and they put you down and they scorn your faith in Jesus Christ. [00:26:25]
The source of the Great Tribulation is God. It is his wrath, it is his fury, it is his judgment that he's going to bring upon the earth and it is for the wicked who will be punished. Isaiah 26: For behold, the Lord comes out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity. [00:28:43]
Jesus said, pray ye always that you'll be accounted worthy to escape these things that are coming upon the earth and to stand before the Son of man. Be carefully said, lest your life become so involved in just eating, drinking and the cares of this life that that day will catch you unprepared. [00:33:17]
