Prepared and Sent: Living as God's Precious Treasure

Jesus asks how opposition and adversity are handled when help is offered and hostility comes back. Jesus places that question right at the heart of the call to be God’s precious treasure. God’s precious treasure is not meant to stay locked away. The call on Jesus followers sends them out into the world on God’s behalf, to show off God, to live as a bridge, and to connect people to God’s love.

Jesus has already prepared his disciples for this in the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus says that reviling, false words, and persecution will come “on my account,” and yet blessing still rests there. Jesus let them hear his words, watch his life, and practice what he was giving them to do. God still sends his people with families and church families that love them as God’s precious treasure. That team helps faith grow.

Faith formation names this work of growing life in God. The gathering of the church becomes a practice session that reinforces what happens in daily life, in homes, in prayer, in Scripture, in serving, in sharing, and in worship through thoughts, words, and deeds. Daily practices take the truth of being God’s precious treasure from something merely heard into something planted within. Then that truth begins to inspire a life that shows off the face of Christ.

Adversity may come from families, neighbors, coworkers, or unexpected places. The practices of faith prepare God’s people for those moments. Practices of the faith are grace for the journey, and such grace is needed when the times are challenging.
