Preparing for Christ's Coming: Urgency, Warning, and Immortality

Revelation 22 closes the canon with Jesus saying, “Behold, I am coming soon,” and with the Spirit and the bride still saying, “Come.” Jesus joins that promise in John 14 to his comfort for troubled hearts: He goes to prepare a place, and He will come again to receive His people to Himself. The promise of Christ’s return is not a vague spiritual idea or a secret event. The return of Jesus will be visible, literal, global, and glorious.

Second Peter answers the question raised by the long wait. God is not slack concerning His promise, even when human beings count the years and wonder where He is. God’s patience does not mean delay or failure. God waits because He desires that none should perish, and because dim lights still need to carry the glory of Christ, His character, His kindness, and His deeds around the world.

Paul describes the coming of Jesus as a command, a trumpet, and a resurrection. Christ will descend from heaven, the righteous dead will rise first, and the living righteous will be caught up with them to meet the Lord in the air. Christ’s recompense brings relief to those afflicted for His sake, while those who reject God and disobey the gospel face destruction away from His presence. The return of Christ therefore brings both reward and judgment.

First Corinthians 15 names one of the greatest rewards at Christ’s coming: immortality. Mortal people do not naturally possess immortality, because God alone has immortality in Himself. God gives His faithful people the finishing touch of immortality when the trumpet sounds, death is swallowed up in victory, and perishable bodies put on the imperishable. Christ gives His people glorified bodies because they will be like Him and see Him as He is.

The flash flood in Nepal gives a picture of why “soon” is relative. A wall of water may be far upstream for one community and only minutes away for another, yet the flood is still coming. Christ’s coming was soon to the disciples, soon to the Advent pioneers, and remains soon for those living today. The disaster also shows the weight of advanced warning. Those who know a flood is coming and say nothing fail in a duty of care toward their neighbors.

The coming of Jesus leaves no room for casual preparation. Human buildings, achievements, and engineering marvels will not stand when Christ comes in glory. Christ calls His people to occupy until He comes, to be ready themselves, and to warn family, friends, and the world. Love for Jesus, not fear alone, gives urgency to the work of helping others prepare.
