Rejoice and Be Ready: Preparing for Christ's Return

Chicken Little’s story sets the picture: an acorn falls, panic spreads, everybody runs to tell the king, and Foxy Loxy uses the fear to drag them into his den. The world sounds a lot like that right now. Wars, weather, prices, AI, trouble everywhere, and even the Mets in last place can make it feel like “the sky is falling.” But God’s people do not have to give in to the hype of the world, because God’s people are people of hope.

The first word is rejoice. Paul wrote “rejoice in the Lord” from prison, not from a comfortable place where everything was working out. The call to rejoice does not deny problems. The call to rejoice tells those problems about God, the God who spoke the world into existence, brought Israel through the Red Sea, sent his Son, and raised Jesus from the dead.

The second word is resurrection. Jesus died and rose again, and that is not an add-on to the gospel. The resurrection is part of the gospel package. Without it, the gospel does not make sense. The dead in Christ will rise first, and tired old bodies will receive a complete makeover, a body suited for resurrection life.

The third word is rapture. The church of Jesus Christ will be caught up, snatched away, carried quickly to a new place and rescued from danger. The timing of that rapture has different theories, but the main thing is not worth fighting over: Jesus is coming again, and God’s people need to be ready.

The fourth word is revelation. God has pulled back the curtain through his Word. Human speculation is not the foundation, because divine revelation has already spoken. Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21, Paul’s letters, the prophets, and Revelation all tell enough for God’s people to live awake and watchful.

The fifth word is rebellion. Satan has been trying to sabotage God’s plans since Eden, and the lawless one, the antichrist, will rise in the last days. He will come as a peacemaker, build a one-world system, oppose Christ, and set himself up as God. But his doom is already sealed.

The sixth word is ready. Peter asks the real question: “What kind of people should you be?” Holy and godly lives matter now. Readiness means getting right with God, getting right with others, and getting on with the mission. Chicken Little was partly right: one day the sky will open, and the King will come through it.
