Predecide to Trust God Through the Wait

A church that pleases God trusts God, even when it does not get every detail. Trust does not need a contract, a materials list, an exact price, or a map before it moves. God has already proven Himself more trustworthy than anybody sitting beside His people, yet trouble can still bring out trust issues.

Proverbs calls God’s people to “trust in the Lord with all your heart” and not lean on their own understanding. That verse looks good on a mug or a T-shirt, but it gets hard when health, marriage, children, money, or a long-standing prayer refuses to change. Worry often exposes the very place where trust has not yet been surrendered. Trust never really graduates because faith in one area does not automatically become faith in every other area.

Trust must be pre-decided before the doctor’s report, before the marriage counseling, before the hard conversation with a child, and before the mortgage is due. That decision made beforehand helps God’s people trust Him when something actually happens. Trials, not triumphs, become the fertile ground where trust grows.

Hannah shows what that kind of trust looks like. Year after year, Peninnah taunted her, Hannah remained without children, and her pain kept showing up at the very place of worship. Shame, unanswered prayer, and the cruel comparison of seeing God seemingly do for others what He had not done for her made trust hard. Yet Hannah got up from her grief and went to pray.

Hannah’s anguish did not push her away from God. Her tears, anger, and desperate prayer became a pouring out of her heart before the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. God can handle that kind of emotion. He would rather His people run to Him in pain than run away from Him.

Hannah’s vow revealed a deeper surrender: if God gave her a son, she would give that son back to God for his whole life. Eli’s word of peace did not immediately change her circumstances, but God’s presence changed her countenance. Hannah ate, stopped being sad, and rose early the next morning to worship once more. In due time, not in her time, God remembered her plea and gave her Samuel, whose name meant, “God heard.”

God may be doing something in the heart before He does something for the life. Hannah’s long surrender prepared her to release Samuel, and God used Samuel to anoint David and shape Israel’s future. Worship once more, pray once more, and trust once more because God remains faithful even while the circumstance remains unfinished.
