When the weariness of life sets in and the desire to give up feels overwhelming, the most powerful step is to redirect our gaze. Instead of focusing on the size of the problem or the depth of our exhaustion, we are called to look to the one who has already run the race and finished it well. This act of reorientation shifts our perspective from our own limited strength to His limitless power and faithfulness. It is a conscious decision to seek His face in the midst of our struggle. [30:44]
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
Hebrews 12:1-2a (NIV)
Reflection: What specific circumstance or struggle in your life is currently tempting you to quit, and how might intentionally fixing your eyes on Jesus change your perspective on it this week?
We are not left without a perfect example to follow in our own hardships. Jesus Christ experienced the full spectrum of human struggle, from family strife and deep grief to the pain of betrayal by close friends. He understands the weight of our burdens because He has carried similar ones Himself. His life provides a pattern of faithfulness that did not quit, even when faced with the cross. By looking to His example, we find both empathy and a model for how to endure. [35:02]
Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Hebrews 12:3 (NIV)
Reflection: In which area of your life do you most need to emulate Christ's perseverance, and what one practical step can you take today to follow His pattern?
The Christian life is not lived by our own power but through the constant, empowering presence of God's Spirit within us. This is the profound mystery of the new covenant—Christ Himself lives in every believer. This means His strength, comfort, and guidance are never distant or unavailable. We are never alone in our battles, for the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead is our ever-present help and source of resurrection power for daily life. [52:12]
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
John 14:16-17 (NIV)
Reflection: How does the truth that God's Spirit lives in you, not just with you, change the way you approach a current challenge?
To fix our eyes on Jesus requires the simultaneous action of looking away from everything else that demands our attention. The waves of our circumstances, the giants of our fears, and the weights of our past sins can all pull our focus away from our source of strength. Perseverance is cultivated by a daily, sometimes moment-by-moment, choice to avert our gaze from what is temporary and troubling to behold the one who is eternal and unchanging. [57:13]
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
Matthew 14:30-31 (NIV)
Reflection: What is one specific "wind" or "wave" in your life that consistently distracts you from focusing on Jesus, and what would it look like to actively look away from it today?
Our lives are not accidental; we were created by God for a specific purpose and good works which He prepared in advance for us. This eternal perspective infuses our daily struggles with meaning and helps us to endure. The goal is not merely to avoid hardship, but to faithfully complete the race God has set before us. We can be assured that our heavenly Father is with us every step of the way, ready to help us up and carry us across the finish line when we feel we cannot take another step. [01:02:54]
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
Reflection: How does remembering that God has a purposeful plan for your life help you to not give up when you encounter obstacles or weariness?
Hebrews 12 summons believers to run the race of faith by fixing their eyes on Jesus and refusing to quit. Scripture urges throwing off everything that hinders and identifying the sins and weights that so easily entangle, then pursuing perseverance in the long haul rather than fleeting enthusiasm. The life of Jesus supplies the pattern: the pioneer and perfecter of faith showed how to endure family conflict, grief, betrayal, and temptation without abandoning the mission. The gospel reveals more than an example; it delivers presence—through the living Word, the gathered church as Christ’s body, and the personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit, the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead. That indwelling makes God intimate and near in every circumstance, not dependent on location or feeling.
Practical images underline the call to focus: David facing Goliath and Peter walking on water illustrate the danger of looking at the giant or the waves instead of God. Throwing off distractions and keeping the gaze on Christ prevents sinking when storms rise. The apostolic witness insists that trials refine faith and produce perseverance only when quitting does not occur. A clear sense of God-given purpose anchors endurance; life carries value because God crafted each person for prepared good works, and finishing the race matters more than fleeting success or the lure of “more.”
Compassion and community matter in the struggle to persevere. The Father helps when failure happens, rises with new mercies, and equips broken believers to take the next steps. The church functions as both a place to be strengthened and a body to build up, not demolish through criticism. Prayer, mutual support, and the Spirit’s power equip believers to resist the enemy’s attempts to distract or wear them down. The net call centers on one resolute predecision: when tempted to give up, look away from the problem and fix the eyes on Jesus until the finish line is reached.
You see, he brought you into this world, into existence with a plan and a purpose for your life. You're not here by accident. I don't care what the world tries to sell you on that. You are here by the design of the creator God with a plan and a purpose for your life. And the worst thing you can do is start listening to the lies that you're just an accident and and you don't even really have any reason for being here. You just gotta make the best of it. What a miserable way to live because you end up treating yourself and others so terribly when you think that's what your life is about.

The same spirit that raised Jesus from that grave, where is he now if you're a Christian? He's in you too. That's the same spirit that brought Jesus back from the dead. It's in you. It's in me. Every day wherever we go. People are always saying, I just wanna feel the presence of the spirit. Sometimes you're not gonna feel it, but does that mean he's gone? No. He's still there. He promised this is a gift from God. God doesn't go back on his gift. You have his spirit in you all the time

See, the father doesn't wanna leave you when you fall, when you fail, when you mess up. His mercies are new every day. He's right there with you to pick you up and help you keep going. If you could keep your eyes where they need to be and look for the help of the father, he says, I'll never let you be tempted or tried beyond what you will be able to bear up under because I will be there to help you bear up under it. I will help you get across the finish line, but don't let the enemy get you to look somewhere else. Look at me. That's what the father was saying to his son. Just just let me help you. Just look at me. Put your head up, son. Look at me. And he got him across the finish line.

Simply stated today, here's the pre decision I want us to make, all of us together. It's when we start feeling like we wanna give up, you pre decide, I'm gonna fix my eyes on Jesus when I'm feeling that. I've gotta put my eyes on Jesus when I think I can't go on anymore, when I can't take another step, when I can't do this now like he wants me to do it.

And here's what we do in our struggles. We start looking at the struggles. We start giving them all of our attention. We start focusing on, the money problem. We start focusing on everything wrong in our marriage or we start right. We look at the problem more than we look at Jesus, more than we focus on Jesus. That's when we sink. That's when we fall. That's when we trip up and make mistakes. That's when we don't keep our eyes where they need to be.

But he says, I'm gonna leave you, but I'm not gonna leave you as orphans. Instead, what I'm gonna do is when I when I go back to the father, I'm not gonna leave you without the help you need. I'm gonna send back to you the help that you need. And he calls this help the advocate and he's reveals in scripture that the advocate he's referring to is the Holy Spirit himself. He says, I'm gonna send another advocate to help you and be with you forever.

And his father just helped him take those next steps. And while they were finishing to get to the finish line, over 65,000 people stood up and just applauded. And tears were flowing. And the father got the son across the finish line. He didn't win an earthly race that day. He finished something that he saw as his purpose with the help of his father.
