Jude gives one main command in verses 20 and 21: “keep yourselves in the love of God.” The command does not mean that God stops keeping his people, because Jude has already said that believers are kept for Jesus Christ, and he will later praise the God who is able to keep them from stumbling. The command names the means God gives his people for living in that keeping grace: building themselves up in the most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, and waiting for Christ’s mercy.
Prayer matters because God is sovereign. God is not like somebody who wound up a watch and walked away. God continually sustains all things, directs all things, and fulfills his purposes through all things. Prayer goes straight to the top, to the One who can actually do something about every need, every fear, and every burden.
Prayer also matters because God commands it. Jesus says, “When you pray,” assuming that his people will pray, and then says, “Pray then like this.” Paul says not to be anxious about anything, but in everything to make requests known to God. The word “everything” means everything. Prayer is not burdensome religious work meant to impress God. Prayer is the invitation of a loving Father saying, “Let’s talk.”
Prayer is also a means of grace. Breathing does not create life, but God has ordained breathing as the means by which he sustains physical life. In the same way, praying in the Spirit does not earn God’s love, but God has ordained prayer as a means by which his people keep themselves in the love he has given them. Neglecting prayer while expecting spiritual strength makes no more sense than ignoring breathing while expecting to live.
Praying in the Holy Spirit is not super prayer, a special level of prayer, or praying in unknown tongues. Paul calls believers to pray at all times in the Spirit, which means that all true prayer should be Spirit-enabled prayer. The Holy Spirit instigates prayer by giving God’s children the desire to cry, “Abba, Father.” The Holy Spirit inspires prayer by helping weak believers know what to pray for. The Holy Spirit empowers prayer because prayer is hard work and requires strength beyond the flesh.
Prayer in the Spirit comes by faith and according to the Word of God. The Word shapes the will, and the Spirit who inspired the Word shapes the prayers that rise from it. Prayer should ask God to save the lost, give the church boldness, grow the church in maturity, send the gospel among the nations, and comfort those who are hurting. Prayer should bring everything to the Father, trusting his mercy and his power.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Prayer goes straight to the top [36:00] God’s sovereignty does not make prayer unnecessary. God’s sovereignty makes prayer sensible, because prayer comes before the One who sustains and directs all things. Prayer rests not in the strength of the request, but in the rule of the God who hears it. [36:00]
- 2. Prayer is spiritual breathing [42:33] Prayer does not purchase God’s love or keep believers saved by their own effort. Prayer is one of the means through which God supplies grace to his people. Spiritual life grows weak when prayer is treated as optional rather than necessary. [42:33]
- 3. The Spirit moves believers to pray [46:03] The desire to pray is not merely a religious impulse or a natural personality trait. The Holy Spirit works in God’s children, moving them to call upon their Father. Prayer begins with grace before a word is ever spoken. [46:03]
- 4. Weakness is not a reason to quit [55:43] Weariness, anger, depression, and confusion can make prayer feel impossible. The Holy Spirit meets believers precisely in that weakness and helps them pray. Prayer about the inability to pray is still prayer, and God does not despise it. [55:43]
- 5. God’s Word gives prayer its shape [57:07] Scripture guards prayer from being driven only by personal passions and passing fears. The Word teaches believers what God loves, what God promises, and what God desires to accomplish. Praying Scripture back to God forms desires that are increasingly in step with his will.
