The Praying Church: Prayer for Boldness | Acts 4

Acts 4 shows the first church under pressure, not in theory, but in real danger. Peter and John had gone to the temple for prayer, found a crippled man at the Beautiful Gate, and in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth told him to rise up and walk. The man who had spent his whole life outside the gate entered leaping and praising God, and Peter used that moment to proclaim that the power had not come from him, but from God. The same leaders who had condemned Jesus were annoyed that Jesus and the resurrection were being preached again, so they arrested Peter and John and threatened them to stop speaking in that name.

Peter stands in the very place where he once denied Jesus, but now the Spirit makes him bold. Peter declares that there is no other name under heaven given among men by which anyone must be saved. The council wants the name of Jesus silenced, but Peter and John answer, “We cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” Their release does not send them into hiding. The threat sends them straight to their friends, to the gathered church.

Acts 4 shows where Christians go when the world presses in. The church is not a religious errand where individuals say the right words and leave. The church is the place where the deepest relationships are meant to be formed because the deepest truths are shared there. The gathered friends do not gossip, strategize first, or merely go through motions. They lift their voices together to God.

Their prayer is striking because it does not ask first for safety or escape. The church asks for boldness to keep preaching and for God to stretch out his hand so that the gospel would be believed. Jesus had already taken the cup of wrath in the garden and at the cross, so the church now prays from victory, not panic. If Christ has drunk the cup in full, the wrath of the world cannot undo what God has won.

God answers with power. The place shakes, the Holy Spirit fills them again, and the church continues to speak the word of God with boldness. Prayer brings the power of heaven into the mission of the church on earth. Prayer shakes the world, fills believers with God himself, and moves the church from fear into proclamation.
