Praying Boldly: The Transformative Prayer of Jabez
Summary
In today's message, we explored the profound prayer of Jabez found in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10. This prayer, though brief, is a powerful testament to the faith and character of Jabez, a man who stood out in the midst of a long genealogy. Despite being born in pain, Jabez rose to become more honorable than his brothers, demonstrating that character is not inherited but developed through a life committed to God. His prayer is a model for us, showing how to approach God with boldness and faith.
Jabez's prayer consists of four key requests: for God to bless him, to enlarge his territory, for God's hand to be with him, and to keep him from evil. These requests, while seemingly self-focused, reveal a deep desire to be used by God and to live a life that honors Him. Jabez understood the greatness of the God he was praying to—the God of Israel, who performed mighty acts throughout history. This understanding fueled his boldness in prayer, reminding us that our prayers should reflect the magnitude of the God we serve.
The first request, "bless me indeed," is a plea for God's abundant favor, not for selfish gain, but to be a blessing to others. Jabez knew that true blessing comes from God and that it is beyond what we can achieve on our own. The second request, "enlarge my territory," is a call to expand one's influence for God's kingdom, requiring faith and action. Jabez's third request, "that your hand would be with me," acknowledges the need for God's power and anointing to accomplish His will. Finally, the request to "keep me from evil" highlights the importance of remaining humble and dependent on God to avoid the pitfalls of pride and temptation.
As we reflect on Jabez's prayer, we are challenged to pray with the same boldness and faith, trusting in God's ability to bless, guide, and protect us. By doing so, we align ourselves with His purposes and open ourselves to His transformative work in our lives.

Jabez's life exemplifies that character is not a trait we are born with but something we develop through our commitment to God. Despite being born in pain, Jabez rose to become more honorable than his brothers, showing that our past does not define our future. It is through daily routines, choices, and a steadfast commitment to God that our character is formed. This development makes us prime candidates for God's use and blessing. As we strive to cultivate our character, we should focus on aligning our actions and decisions with God's will, allowing His transformative power to shape us into vessels of honor. [04:04]

This teaches us that true blessing is meant to overflow into the lives of those around us, expanding God's kingdom. As we seek God's blessing, we should do so with the intention of being a blessing to others, allowing His love and grace to flow through us. By doing so, we become active participants in God's work, using the resources and opportunities He provides to impact the world for His glory. [09:14]

As we seek to enlarge our territory, we should be open to new opportunities and challenges, relying on God's strength and wisdom to navigate them. By doing so, we align ourselves with His purposes, allowing Him to use us in ways we never imagined. [14:37]

Quotes
Jabez was born in trauma but he became a man of character I think because he was a man of character is one of the reasons that that God wanted to make sure this was in his word and that we'd hear about it today character is character is isn't something an individual is born with. Character is developed with time as a person meditates on their principles. [00:03:29] (27 seconds)
And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, oh, that you would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory, that your hand would be with me and that you would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain. So God granted him what he requested. On the surface, it almost looks like a selfish prayer, doesn't it? It seems like it's almost all about me. But when you look at it in a little more depth, when you realize that he truly was a man of character, and he truly wanted to please God, you see that this is not a selfish prayer. [00:04:42] (42 seconds)
He called out to the God who opened the Red Sea and destroyed the Pharaoh's army. The God who gave manna in the desert for 40 years so his people could have bread. The God who produced water from a rock. The God who directed his people with a cloud by day and a tower of fire by night. The God who allowed Elijah to be fed by ravens gave him the power to raise the widow's son from the dead and transported his mighty prophet to heaven in a whirlwind. He knew who he was calling out to. [00:06:12] (37 seconds)
The purpose of your praying isn't to inform God because he already knows your needs. When you pray, it's a reminder of your dependence on him and his plan for your life and how he wants to be involved in your life and how he wants to guide your life. So Jabez makes four passionate requests. You can see the passion in the words that were pinned on his behalf. [00:07:34] (36 seconds)
Jabez wasn't asking for something he could obtain for himself. He was asking God who had unlimited resources to do something that he could never do on his own. He knew that to bless meant to impart supernatural favor. Jabez wasn't asking for a small blessing. He was asking God for the greatest blessing possible, an abundant supernatural blessing that he could use to help other people. [00:08:34] (39 seconds)
What if we began to ask with faith like Jabez asked? What if we began to see our God as who he really is instead of seeing our God? Boy, I hope he answers. I hope he hears me when I pray. I'm going to say these words, but I don't really know if it's even going beyond where I'm at. When you pray, I want you to get a revelation of prayer that maybe you've never had before. [00:10:14] (31 seconds)
God, will you bless me so that I can be a better blessing? Lord, will you change me so that I can be a man or woman of character who you really desire for me to be? That's what part of this blessing means, and that's what you're praying. It's a dangerous thing to pray that way, because God's going to move in more ways than you even dreamed. [00:11:55] (33 seconds)
Begin to ask God to help you set new boundaries, to let your faith expand, to let your mind move beyond maybe where it was before. Actually, the Great Commission is really a call to enlarge our territory, God's territory. It's found in Matthew 28, the last verses 18 through 20. And Jesus came and spoke to them, All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. This is after he rose from the dead. [00:15:45] (39 seconds)
What God is calling you to can't be accomplished without his anointing. So, Lord, may your hand be upon me. May your power just flow through me so that I can be your vessel where I am in whatever situation I'm in, Lord God. I yield myself to you, Lord God, but by faith I reach up and I receive that power from you. Are you with me today? [00:21:00] (29 seconds)
When the Holy Spirit is poured out, you're given the power to carry out God's plans. You'll be my witnesses. When you feel like God is prompting you to do something, ask him for the power you need to accomplish what he wants you to do. Because in prayer, we pray these prayers and we feel like God is telling us to do something. And in prayer, gosh, it sounds good. And then we get back in the real life and going through things in life. And we think, God, I need you. [00:22:52] (39 seconds)
So the fourth request is keep me from evil that I might not cause pain. When you yield to temptation, it causes pain to somebody. It's going to cause pain to you eventually, and somebody else is going to be hurt. So what is so powerful about this last part of this prayer? Jabez had a lot of wisdom. You see how he was truly a man of character. He said, Lord, keep me from evil that I don't cause pain to somebody. [00:25:50] (29 seconds)
And can I remind you that when you're praying, you're praying to the God of Israel. You're praying to the God who created the heavens and the earth. You're praying to the one that has eternity in his hands and will be with forever in heaven. And can I ask you to just, as you're praying, just believe that you're stepping into the presence of God. And God, I don't say these words casually. I come into your presence by faith knowing that you have all the answers. [00:28:43] (33 seconds)
