Prayer: The Heartbeat of Faith and Worship

Summary

In our discussion today, we delved into the profound relationship between prayer and faith, emphasizing that prayer is the chief exercise of faith. Prayer is not merely a ritual but a dynamic expression of our faith, fueled by the Word of God. As Romans 10:17 states, "Faith comes from hearing the Word of God," and thus, immersing ourselves in Scripture is essential for a vibrant prayer life. This immersion not only nurtures our faith but also naturally leads to a more profound and spontaneous prayer life, as seen in the example of Daniel, whose prayers were inspired by his engagement with Scripture.

We also explored the practical aspects of prayer within families and communities. Modeling prayer is crucial; children learn to pray not just by being told to do so but by witnessing their parents' genuine dependence on God. This modeling creates an environment where prayer becomes a natural and integral part of life. Furthermore, we discussed the importance of understanding the purpose of prayer—not to change God's will but to align ourselves with His purposes, as exemplified by Christ in Gethsemane.

The discussion also touched on the theological aspects of prayer, particularly the sovereignty of God. While God is sovereign and knows all, prayer is a means by which we are drawn into His life and purposes. It is a privilege to share in the concerns of Christ and to participate in His work in the world. This understanding shifts our prayers from being self-centered to being God-centered, seeking His glory above all.

Finally, we addressed the potential pitfalls of theological study becoming an end in itself. True theology should lead us to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. It should not puff us up with knowledge but humble us, leading to worship and deeper dependence on God. As we study theology, our aim should be to know God more intimately, which in turn leads to greater love, obedience, and ultimately, glorification of Him.

Day 1: Prayer as the Living Expression of Faith
Prayer is the primary way faith expresses itself, and it is fueled by the Word of God. Immersing ourselves in Scripture enriches our prayer life, as seen in Daniel's example. This relationship between Scripture and prayer is vital for a vibrant faith. Prayer is not just a ritual but a dynamic expression of our faith, deeply rooted in the Word of God. As we immerse ourselves in Scripture, our faith is nurtured, leading to a more profound and spontaneous prayer life. Daniel's life exemplifies this, as his prayers were inspired by his engagement with Scripture. By hearing the Word of God, our faith grows, and our prayers become more aligned with God's will. [00:34]

"So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." (Romans 10:17, ESV)

Reflection: How can you incorporate more Scripture into your daily prayer life to deepen your faith and connection with God?

Day 2: Cultivating a Prayerful Environment in Families
Children learn to pray by observing their parents' genuine prayer life. Modeling prayer within families creates an environment where prayer becomes a natural part of life, fostering a community of faith. When parents model a genuine dependence on God through prayer, it creates an environment where prayer becomes a natural and integral part of life. This modeling is crucial for children, as they learn not just by being told to pray but by witnessing their parents' authentic relationship with God. By fostering a community of faith within the family, prayer becomes a shared experience that strengthens bonds and nurtures spiritual growth. [03:51]

"And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." (Deuteronomy 6:6-7, ESV)

Reflection: How can you model a genuine prayer life to those around you, especially within your family or close community?

Day 3: Aligning with God's Purposes Through Prayer
Prayer is not about changing God's will but aligning ourselves with His purposes. Understanding this helps us approach prayer with the right mindset, seeking intimacy with God and preparing for life's challenges. Prayer is a means of aligning ourselves with God's purposes rather than attempting to change His will. This understanding shifts our perspective, allowing us to approach prayer with the right mindset. By seeking intimacy with God through prayer, we prepare ourselves for life's challenges and align our desires with His divine plan. This alignment is exemplified by Christ in Gethsemane, who sought God's will above His own. [13:32]

"And going a little farther, he fell on his face and prayed, saying, 'My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.'" (Matthew 26:39, ESV)

Reflection: In what areas of your life do you need to align your will with God's purposes, and how can prayer help you in this process?

Day 4: Theological Study as a Path to Worship
True theological study should lead to worship and glorification of God. It should not become an intellectual exercise but a means to know God more intimately, leading to greater love and obedience. Theological study is not an end in itself but a path to worship and glorification of God. It should humble us, leading to a deeper dependence on God and a greater love for Him. By studying theology with the aim of knowing God more intimately, we are drawn into a life of worship and obedience, ultimately glorifying Him. This approach prevents theology from becoming a mere intellectual exercise and instead transforms it into a means of spiritual growth. [28:56]

"Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!" (Romans 11:33, ESV)

Reflection: How can you ensure that your study of theology leads to a deeper worship and glorification of God in your daily life?

Day 5: Participating in God's Sovereignty Through Prayer
While God is sovereign, He has created a universe where we have free agency. Prayer is a means by which we participate in God's purposes, aligning our will with His and sharing in His concerns for the world. God's sovereignty does not negate our free agency; rather, it invites us to participate in His purposes through prayer. By aligning our will with His, we share in His concerns for the world and become active participants in His work. This understanding shifts our prayers from being self-centered to being God-centered, seeking His glory above all. Prayer becomes a privilege, allowing us to engage with God's divine plan and contribute to His work in the world. [16:40]

"The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps." (Proverbs 16:9, ESV)

Reflection: How can you use prayer as a means to participate in God's purposes and align your will with His in your daily life?

Quotes

It helps to understand what prayer is. John Calvin famously said that "prayer is the chief exercise of faith." Prayer is faith expressing itself, and it is the primary way in which faith expresses itself. Now, if that is true, what will help prayer? Well, what creates faith? Romans 10, "Faith comes from hearing the Word of God." And so, it is the Word of God that is the fuel that creates faith, which expresses itself in prayer, and therefore the primary way to make people voluntarily, willingly, enrich and deepen and prolong their prayer lives is to soak them in Scripture. [00:05:47]

Scripture reading and prayer always go together. One will always be the fuel for the other. So, give your people a vision of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ, shown in the Word of Christ, His Scriptures, and their faith will grow, and prayer will simply flow out of that. [00:01:19]

Modeling prayer is such an important component of our engagement and fellowship with one another. I, too, remember my father and my mother praying. And if the encouragement to our children is that we want them to pray, unfortunately, telling them to pray doesn't seem to work very well in my family. What often seems to happen is when dads and moms do pray, in dependence, in recognition of their sinfulness as well as their helplessness, those are the things that are caught and not necessarily taught. [00:04:00]

If the question is about our family in our local churches, modeling prayer is such an important component of our engagement and fellowship with one another. I, too, remember my father and my mother praying. And if the encouragement to our children is that we want them to pray, unfortunately, telling them to pray doesn't seem to work very well in my family. [00:04:00]

Prayer is not to change the will of God, and it is not to inform God, to render an account of what is happening on earth, because He knows those things even better than we do. So, why do we pray? Well, again, we pray, number one, because we are commanded to pray, and that would be enough. Number two, we pray to enter into the purpose of God, just like Christ did at Gethsemane, so that I may be prepared for the experiences of events ahead of me. [00:13:25]

In prayer, we're being drawn into the life of Christ. We're getting to share His concerns for the world, which is why as you grow in your prayer life, your prayer life should slowly become less egocentric, all about my worldly concerns, and increasingly, your prayers are shaped by "I want to see the glory of God. Lord, let Your glory shine over all the world," and I am praying for things to that end. [00:12:15]

You need to know God's absolute sovereign ability to steer his creation any way He will. That every molecule moves at His command. Therefore, He is able to answer prayer. Secondly, He is not only completely able, He is a kind Father who is willing, eager to hear the prayers of His children. Now, if you don't know both of those, why would you go to Him? [00:08:51]

True, healthy study of theology must lead you to say, "He must increase; I must decrease." [00:29:07]

The more you come to know who God is in the Word, one cannot help but to end up where Isaiah ended up, recognizing the perfection and the holiness of God and recognizing, in turn, how sinful and depraved our minds and hearts are, and to prostrate himself before Him. There is worship that ends up. [00:24:48]

If we study theology to gain knowledge, that, that is where the problem begins. If we study theology to get to know the character of God, the more you know Him, the more you love Him. The more you love Him, the more you obey Him. The more you obey Him, the more you glorify Him. And that's what life is all about, about glorifying Him. [00:31:00]

The only person who can illuminate our minds to truly comprehend God and His Word is the Spirit through our prayers. And this is where I think for many of us, in order that this doesn't become simply an intellectual exercise for us, we come to the Lord in prayer, even as we read, even as we study theology, and as we study God in His Word, we come deeper into understanding who He is, and it cannot but lead to worship and evermore dependence upon all of us who are approaching Him in His Word. [00:27:06]

The question, I think, to guide how to do theology healthily is, "Am I glorifying God or glorifying myself?" If you are studying so that people marvel at how clever and educated you are, not so that people see the glory of God, you are taking the part of the God of this world who does not want people to see the glory of God, but blinds them.
