#KeptAndSentMission
“``What does it mean for the rooms that you are gonna step into this week? The workplace. That person who sits beside you in the tutorial. Those aren't accidents. They're placements. The family gathering you've been dreading, where the conversation goes sideways, actually, it's not a burden. It's not something to just have to survive. It's a specific placement that you've been put into. Jesus is not asking any of us to fix the broken world. That's absolutely his job, but he is asking us to be present because you and I, we have been kept, set apart for this exciting mission, kept enough to stay and sent enough to go.”

#FaithInTheOrdinary
“The purpose is immediately is immediate. Sanctify them, and in the next sentence, Jesus is talking about if we go back to our scripture being sent. I have sent them into the world. So therefore, next slide, the consecrating and also the commissioning are inseparable. You are set apart from the world. You are not set apart from the world. You are set apart for it, to go into the world. We are chosen chosen and dedicated for this amazing service wherever God puts you to show his love to a world that doesn't know it but longs for it, that we should love God and obey his word, and encourage others to do likewise.”

#MissionBeginsAtTheCross
“We can't be a witness to a world that we have withdrawn from, and nor can we be a witness when we are slaves to the world. Now I want you to understand, I'm not saying there are not seasons and rhythms where you and I need to step away and we need to quietly open the word of God and pray and meditate on God's word, when we shut the the door to the world to be alone with God. But I want to say these things are not the end or the purpose. This is about refueling so that we can be sent back out. The praying, the meditating, spending time with god's word is with the purpose of us being refreshed so that we could go back out and we could demonstrate what it looks like to love Jesus. In the ordinary work of our daily lives. Christianity isn't about withdrawing. It's about equipping us to be better at displaying the love of God in our lives.”

#PrayedIntoTheWorld
“So I want us to remember that our being sent is not free, that it was purchased by Jesus' blood. That our presence in the world, it isn't a burden. It's a gift, but it's a gift that cost Jesus his life. And the cross, it's not just the way to salvation, to being made right with God. It's actually where our mission begins. So we've looked at the fact that Jesus doesn't ask the father to remove his disciples from the world. That he asked the father to keep them in it. Because that's exactly where they're gonna be needed.”

#NotOfTheWorldButInIt
“So in closing, I want us to imagine what it would mean for us as a congregation where you are in all those different rooms that I mentioned to live like this. That if we understood with unshakable faith that we are consecrated and set apart. You're not with a family, not a family that you're just lumped with, not a suburb that you ended up in by accident or a campus that you live near. It's not a workplace you're stuck with and a colleague who's annoying, but that it is a specific prayed for assignment. It's the answer actually to the prayer that Jesus prayed that night in the garden two thousand years ago of Gethsemane. He prayed it for his disciples, and he prayed it for people he would never meet this side of heaven in a city, in a century that he didn't name.”

#StayInMissionField
“So not of the world is not the same as out of the world. I wanna make that really clear for us. When Jesus is talking in verse 14 and he is talking about they are not of the world even as I am not of it. Right immediately after he says that, we hear the words, my prayer is not that you take them out. And I don't think it's a coincidence that these sentences sit side by side. There's a deliberate distinction between our identity and location Because not all of the world is actually about your identity. It's about whose you are or more grammatically to whom you belong. And also where your loyalties lie.”

#PresenceOverApproval
“That your heart, that our heart, because I I am preaching to myself as well, is to be faithful, but there are times when it feels like that is really difficult. And then, as a result, we do step back from those relationships because they're hard work, and we don't know how to operate in that space to be a Christian. But I sincerely believe that this passage does not endorse that trajectory because the world is the missionary field. And that being kept by the father doesn't mean stepping away from those people who need God's love the most. We were not set apart from the world. We're set apart for the world.”

#PrayedPlacement
“Did you catch it there? Right at the end. Next slide. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world. Jesus actively refuses to pray for extraction on the worst night of his life. He refuses to pray his beloved disciples out of the world. Actually, he prays them into it. That's the sermon. Everything else from here is simply unpacking that message.”
