Praising God is not just for moments of joy or when prayers are answered, but is a continual act that acknowledges His greatness, power, and the blessings He pours out daily. Whether in the sanctuary, at home, or in the midst of life’s challenges, lifting up praise connects us to God’s presence and reminds us that everything we have is a gift from Him. Let every breath be a reason to say, “Thanks be to God,” and let gratitude shape your outlook, even when things are hard. [13:28]
Psalm 150 (NIV):
Praise the Lord.
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.
Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
praise him with timbrel and dancing,
praise him with the strings and pipe,
praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord.
Reflection: What is one specific thing—big or small—that you can praise God for today, even if your circumstances haven’t changed yet?
When you don’t know what to pray or how to find the words, remember that Jesus gave us the Lord’s Prayer as a guide. Each line is packed with meaning: honoring God’s holiness, seeking His will, asking for daily needs, forgiveness, and protection from evil. This prayer is not just a ritual but a way to align your heart with God’s heart, trusting that He listens and cares for every detail of your life. [17:13]
Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV):
“This, then, is how you should pray:
‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’”
Reflection: Which line of the Lord’s Prayer speaks most to your current situation, and how can you make it your personal prayer today?
God is big enough to handle our frustrations, doubts, and even our anger. Throughout the Bible, faithful people like Habakkuk and Moses brought their complaints and questions to God, and He never turned them away. When life feels unfair or overwhelming, you can be honest with God, knowing He will never leave you or forsake you, and His love remains steadfast through every emotion. [36:09]
Habakkuk 1:2-4 (NIV):
How long, Lord, must I call for help,
but you do not listen?
Or cry out to you, “Violence!”
but you do not save?
Why do you make me look at injustice?
Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?
Destruction and violence are before me;
there is strife, and conflict abounds.
Therefore the law is paralyzed,
and justice never prevails.
The wicked hem in the righteous,
so that justice is perverted.
Reflection: Is there something you’ve been holding back from God—anger, disappointment, or confusion? What would it look like to bring it honestly to Him in prayer today?
Prayer is not just about asking, but about trusting that God hears and answers in His perfect timing. Sometimes the answer is immediate, sometimes it takes years, and sometimes it comes in ways we never expected. When you pray, bring your requests with faith, and let God’s peace guard your heart, even as you wait. Remember, God’s timing is always right, and His peace surpasses all understanding. [40:34]
Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV):
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Reflection: What is one prayer you’ve been waiting on God to answer? How can you practice patience and trust Him with the outcome today?
When God answers prayer—whether in big miracles or small daily mercies—don’t let it pass by unnoticed. Like David, let your heart overflow with gratitude and tell others of God’s wonderful deeds. Every answered prayer is a reason to rejoice and a reminder that God is actively involved in your life. Make it a habit to pause, give thanks, and share your story of God’s faithfulness with someone else. [54:09]
Psalm 9:1-2 (NIV):
I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;
I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
I will be glad and rejoice in you;
I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.
Reflection: Think of a recent answered prayer—how can you intentionally thank God and share this blessing with someone else today?
Today, we gathered to reflect on the beautiful intersection of prayer and praise, especially as we approach Thanksgiving. We began by remembering that prayer is not just a ritual, but the very heartbeat of our relationship with God. From the earliest chapters of Genesis, people have called on the name of the Lord, recognizing that every blessing—whether a grandparent’s love, a Thanksgiving meal, or the birth of a child—comes from God’s hand. We walked through the Lord’s Prayer, line by line, with our young disciples, reminding ourselves that when words fail us, Jesus has already given us the words to pray. Prayer is our lifeline, our way of speaking to the God who never leaves us, who is more loyal than even the most faithful friend or pet.
We acknowledged that prayer is not always easy. Sometimes, like Habakkuk or Moses, we get angry with God, frustrated by unanswered prayers or the burdens we carry. But God’s love is steadfast; He can handle our anger, our doubts, and our impatience. He never turns His back on us, even when we turn away from Him. In fact, sometimes He lovingly nudges us back when we stray too far. We are called to trust Him enough to hand over our worries, even when it’s hard to let go of control. Prayer requires patience—God’s timing is not our own, and sometimes the answers come in ways we never expected, or not until the other side of heaven.
I shared my own story of waiting on God, of praying for companionship and provision as I approached retirement, and how God answered in ways that changed my life. We celebrated answered prayers in our community, like the birth of healthy twins after much prayer and concern. But we also recognized that not all prayers are answered as we hope, and yet God’s wisdom and love remain. When prayers are answered, our response should be praise—giving thanks to God with all our hearts, as David did after victory, as Daniel did after deliverance.
We are a blessed people, not because life is always easy, but because God is always faithful. Our prayers matter. When we say we will pray for someone, we must do it, because our prayers may be the lifeline someone else needs. And when God answers, let us not forget to praise Him, to say, “Thanks be to God,” and to share our gratitude with others. Prayer and praise go hand in hand, shaping us into a people of thanksgiving, every day.
Genesis 4:26 (NIV) — > Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord.
2. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
> Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
3. Psalm 9:1-2 (NIV)
> I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.
God is a million times better because he will never leave us, he will never forsake us, he is always with us. And there are times that we get angry with God, right? If you say you've never gotten angry with God, I'm going to say you're probably telling a lie in church and you don't want to tell a lie in church. Sometimes we get angry with God. We get angry when we lose loved ones, we get angry when we know people who are sick, we get angry when our finances crash. [00:33:11] (45 seconds) #HonestFaithStruggles
God being the God that he is, he understands that we will turn angry sometimes. He is our daddy. We probably all in our lifetimes got mad at our daddies, but God still loves us way more than we could ever love him and he will never—this is the one guarantee I can ever make anybody—he will never ever turn his back on you. He will love you through your anger, he will love you through your sadness, he will love you through your joys. He will never ever ever give up on you. When we do pray, we need to give whatever's happening around us to God. How hard is that? I'm a control freak, my husband will tell you, my family will tell you, I need to be in control and I need to fix stuff and I need to fix it fast. All we got to do is turn it over to God. We have to trust that when we pray, God is listening and God will answer us. [00:39:09] (40 seconds) #LetGoAndLetGod
When you pray for rain, you always bring an umbrella, because if you're not going to bring an umbrella and you are praying for rain, you are wasting your time. If you don't think that prayer is going to be answered, when we pray, we have to trust that God will answer us. Now, with prayer comes another P word, and it's called patience. Patience. With prayer comes patience. A lot of us don't have that either, right? This one don't. [00:39:51] (33 seconds) #PrayWithPatience
My point in this story is you got to be patient with God. When you pray, pray like something's going to happen. I did not just say, you know, when I told God I was lonely and I didn't want to be an old maid like my granny said I was going to be, I wasn't actually expecting him to show someone to me in my dream that I knew, but I trusted in God and God not only brought me some financial assurance that I wouldn't be living in a poor house when I retired, he also brought me my soulmate. [00:48:02] (37 seconds) #FaithBringsBlessings
He wants us to pray, he wants to hear from us, but at the same time too, we gotta praise him. Why wouldn't we? This is a God who's given us everything. No matter how bad we've messed up, no matter how much sin is in our lives, no matter how hurtful we've been to people, he still blesses us and he still loves us. So when we do these prayers, we need to recognize answered prayers and say thanks be to God. [00:53:14] (36 seconds) #AnsweredPrayersJoy
On Tuesday night, Stevie's water broke. On Wednesday morning, Stevie had two healthy identical twin babies. Absolutely. It was a prayer that had been said over and over and it was a praise that those babies were born healthy. She was supposed to be induced on December the 15th, so the babies are now off the breathing tube, they're still on a feeding tube, but that will come off with time. It's a blessing from God. ``The thing I want to end with is people are quick to say, especially if someone's passed away, you like, oh, we'll be praying for you and your family, which is wonderful, but you got to do it. Do not use those words to just make somebody feel good. When you say you're going to pray for somebody, that might be the only lifeline people have. So when you say you're going to pray for somebody, do it. [00:58:04] (34 seconds) #PrayRelentlessly
But like Richie says, if there's anything this church knows how to do, by gosh, we know how to pray. We're a little church with a big God. As we end this service, the only thing I can ask that you, your thought that you can leave here with is trust in God, pray relentlessly, and pray like he is going to answer you because he will. If you don't know Jesus Christ as your savior, the altar is always open. All you gotta do is say, Lord, bring Jesus into my heart. There's one question on the test to get to heaven. It's not about works, it's not about church attendance, it's do you accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your savior? That's it. It's the only thing you need to get into heaven. [01:12:59] (32 seconds)
