Luke sets a pattern right in front of the church. The desire for a divine invasion, more of God’s glory, more healings, more deliverance, more of the Holy Spirit, does not grow out of single moments or one big experience. The move of God becomes fruit on the tree of a life that has been cultivated in prayer.
John Hyde’s hidden life of prayer gives a picture of this. The victory in revival was “not won in the pulpits, but in the closet.” The power resting on those meetings came through nights of prayer, praise, and intercession, where a faithful few sought God until the move of God increased.
Luke 5 brings that same reality into the life of Jesus and into the lives of desperate people. The man with leprosy had no cure, no place in society, no family life, no future. Leprosy made him announce, “unclean,” but faith made him get before Jesus and say, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus does not back away from the unclean place. Jesus reaches out, touches him, and says, “I am willing. Be clean.” When a person touches leprosy, that person gets leprosy. But when Jesus touches leprosy, leprosy gets Jesus.
The leper’s posture becomes a picture of prayer. The unclean places in a life, the bondage, the sin, the darkness, the open doors, the broken areas, need to encounter Jesus. Change does not happen by passive wishing, as if a person brings nothing to the table and simply waits at the whim of God. James says drawing near matters, and Jesus meets the one who comes to his feet.
Luke then shows Jesus himself withdrawing often to deserted places to pray. After prayer, “the Lord’s power to heal was with him.” This is the same pattern Luke has already shown when Jesus comes out of the wilderness in the power of the Spirit. Prayer, then power. Hidden seeking, then public fruit.
The paralyzed man and his friends carry the same conviction. The crowd blocks the way, so the roof comes open. They do whatever it takes to get before Jesus, and Jesus gives forgiveness, healing, and restoration. The call is simple and weighty: “Where’s prayer at in your life?” The fruit of the Spirit and the power of the Spirit are directly tied to a cultivated life of prayer.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Prayer grows fruit over time The fruit of the Spirit is not treated like a random accident or a sudden emotional burst. Love, peace, patience, holiness, power, and healing grow where a life is actually being cultivated before Jesus. The question is not only what a person wants from God, but what that person is giving time, hunger, and attention to. [76:22]
- 2. Leprosy must encounter Jesus The leper does not stay at a distance and explain his uncleanness forever. His need drives him past shame, past social pressure, and down to the feet of Jesus. The unclean places in a life do not contaminate Christ when they are surrendered to him, because “when Jesus touches leprosy, leprosy gets Jesus.” [71:50]
- 3. Power follows hidden prayer Luke connects Jesus withdrawing to pray with the Lord’s power being present to heal. The public move of God is tied to the private life of seeking God in deserted places. A life that wants visible power without hidden prayer is trying to pick fruit from a tree that has not been tended. [78:27]
- 4. Desperation gets before Jesus The paralyzed man’s friends do not let the crowd become the final answer. The roof opens because faith refuses to stay stuck outside the room where Jesus is moving. Real prayer often looks like holy interruption, where comfort, appearance, and convenience give way to the one necessary thing. [84:44]
- 5. Jesus is willing to cleanse Jesus answers the leper’s uncertainty with direct mercy: “I am willing. Be clean.” That word reveals the heart of Christ toward the sick, the outcast, and the one who knows something has to go. Prayer begins honestly when a person stops presenting goodness and comes needing mercy. [74:25]
