Standing in the Gap: Prayer, Intercession, and Healing

God’s victory over sin gives the church every reason to praise His holy name. The drama’s chair makes the sin problem plain: sin looks enticing, gets touched, and then gets ahold of people until they cannot get free on their own. The different people around that chair show how sin catches somebody through temptation, distraction, partying, gossip, judgment, and living by what the world calls right. Christ makes the way where nobody else can, because He gave Himself so that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life. The gospel sends disciples toward people stuck in sin, even when those people reject the truth at first. Prayer stands in the gap for friends and family until hearts come to know that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.

Paul’s picture of physical training and godliness shows that hard seasons do not mean God has forsaken His people. God uses days of feeling defeated, lost, or stretched too far to prepare His people for the next step. Paul calls young believers to set an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, because young people may be the only picture of Christ somebody ever sees. Worship reaches beyond singing into petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving for all people. Thanksgiving refuses to make exceptions for the coworker, family member, or difficult person who makes life harder, because God has placed people in believers’ lives as a stewardship.

The dangerous prayer is not asking God to intervene; the dangerous prayer is the prayer left unprayed.
