Bible ReadingEphesians 6:18-20 “praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.”
[05:25]2 Chronicles 20:1-17 “After this the Moabites and Ammonites, and with them some of the Meunites, came against Jehoshaphat for battle. Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, ‘A great multitude is coming against you from Edom, from beyond the sea; and, behold, they are in Hazazon-tamar’ (that is, Engedi). Then Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. And Judah assembled to seek help from the LORD; from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD. And Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, and said, ‘O LORD, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you. O our God, will you not execute judgment on them? For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.’ Meanwhile all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. And the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. And he said, ‘Listen, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem and King Jehoshaphat: Thus says the LORD to you, ‘Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed at this great horde, for the battle is not yours but God’s. Tomorrow go down against them. Behold, they will come up by the ascent of Ziz. You will find them at the end of the valley, east of the wilderness of Jeruel. You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.’ Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Tomorrow go out against them, and the LORD will be with you.’”
[23:49]Matthew 4:1-11 “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’ But he answered, ‘It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God."’ Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, "He will command his angels concerning you," and "On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone."’ Jesus said to him, ‘Again it is written, "You shall not put the Lord your God to the test."’ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, ‘All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Be gone, Satan! For it is written, "You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve."’ Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.”
[20:13]Observation questions- In Ephesians 6:18-20, what repeated words or phrases show how often prayer is supposed to happen and who it is supposed to include? [05:22]
- In 2 Chronicles 20, what did Jehoshaphat do first when he became afraid, and who did he call to seek the Lord with him? [27:47]
- In Matthew 4, what did Jesus keep saying back to the devil, and what does that show about how he responded during the fast? [20:31]
- What kinds of attitudes or struggles tend to come to the surface when comfort is removed in fasting? [16:26]
Interpretation questions- Paul places prayer right alongside the armor of God. What does that suggest about prayer being more than a quiet religious habit? How might that change the way believers view prayer in spiritual warfare? [05:30]
- Jehoshaphat was afraid, but he still turned to the Lord and called the people to fast. What does that show about fear itself? Can fear become a turning point instead of a dead end? [29:27]
- Jesus answered temptation with Scripture after fasting in the wilderness. How does that challenge the idea that fasting only leaves a person weak and drained? [20:44]
- “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” is a very honest prayer. What does that reveal about real dependence on God, especially for people who are used to staying in control? [31:05]
Application questions- Prayer is meant to happen at all times, not only in emergencies. What does “occasional visits” to God look like in real life for you right now, and what would abiding more consistently actually look like this week? [10:34]
- Trust grows through consistency. Where do you sense that you know about God, but do not yet fully trust Him? What spiritual rhythm could help close that gap? [09:45]
- Fasting reveals what controls a person. If comfort were removed for a day, what do you think would come to the surface first in you: anger, anxiety, pride, impatience, control, or something else? [16:18]
- The form is greater than the outcome. Where have you been tempted to change your obedience because the result did not look right? What might it mean to keep the form there instead of compromising? [19:08]
- Some battles are made heavier by unhealthy alignments and connections. Is there any relationship, partnership, or pattern in life that seems to keep pulling arrows into your world? What wisdom or courage is needed there? [27:14]
- “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” is sometimes the most faithful thing a person can say. What situation in your life right now needs that kind of prayer? [30:45]
- Sometimes discipline is not about fighting harder but about standing in position. Where is God asking you to stop striving, take your place, and trust Him to fight the battle? [32:41]
