Pray Confidently, Closely, Cleanly: Victory Over Doubt

John’s testimony in 1 John 5 begins with the biggest victory of all: eternal life in the Son. God has given eternal life, and whoever has the Son has life. John says that believers can know they have that life, and once victory over death is settled, “everything else is gravy.” John then moves to another victory that matters deeply in daily life: victory over doubt in prayer.

Prayer carries mystery, and God does not promise to answer every request exactly the way a person wants. God does invite, encourage, and command His people to pray. John gives confidence before God: if believers ask anything according to His will, He hears them, and if He hears them, they can know He is working concerning their requests. Doubt does not get the final word because God’s character does not change.

Confidence in prayer is not arrogance, cockiness, or demanding that God owes somebody something. Faith comes confidently because of who God is: powerful, righteous, loving, sovereign, and welcoming toward His children. Hebrews calls believers to draw near with confidence to the throne of grace. Faith pleases God because faith comes like a child bringing broken things to a father, fully expecting that the Father can fix what is broken. God literally hung the moon and stars, so nothing brought before Him is beyond His power.

Prayer also has to be close to God. God’s will and God’s kingdom must come before personal preferences. Jesus’ pattern begins, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done,” before it moves to daily needs. Scripture gives clear ground for many prayers: God desires His people to share their faith, turn away from gossip, and become more like Christ. Prayer becomes harder in decisions where no verse says exactly which job to take, house to buy, or move to make. Those moments require talking to God frequently and listening to God fervently.

Prayer cannot become an Amazon-ordering kind of prayer life, where requests are placed and answers are expected at the door the next day. God calls His people to get alone, get quiet, open His Word, get on their faces before Him, and wait for His direction. Prayer also has to be clean before God. Ongoing, practiced sin hinders fellowship and dulls spiritual hearing. Joshua’s defeat at Ai shows that sin in the camp must be dealt with before victory can be expected. Repentance must come before demands.

God answers finite requests with omniscient, infinite wisdom. Prayer finds peace not by controlling outcomes, but by trusting that a good, perfect, loving God will answer in a good, perfect, loving way.
