Daniel 3 sets before the soul conduct so tried, and yet so triumphant in the trial, that some fixed principle must have produced it. The golden image in the Plain of Dura was no little thing, but a great public demand that all peoples, nations, and languages should fall down when the music sounded. Nebuchadnezzar’s decree pressed the issue plainly, worship the image or be cast the same hour into the burning fiery furnace.
The word of God does not give mere stories, as though Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were placed beside fables or interesting tales. The word of God gives principles for life. Judah’s condition in the days from which these young men came was morally loose, not merely in one narrow sense, but in the whole matter of right and wrong. Jeremiah and Zephaniah show princes, judges, priests, and prophets leading in evil, while the people claimed the name of the Lord and still followed idolatry.
The background of these young men therefore matters. Babylon did not simply seize unknown boys from a healthy spiritual society. Nebuchadnezzar chose the best of the royal seed and nobility, young men suited to be taught the literature and language of the Chaldeans. Babylon changed their names, trained their minds, and intended to make them pliable and compliant. Yet God had a greater purpose than Nebuchadnezzar’s purpose.
The miracle that explains their stand is life changing grace. God arrests sinners, as surely as Saul of Tarsus was stopped on the road to Damascus. Salvation is of the Lord, not something man produces. God quickens those dead in trespasses and sins, begins a good work, and holds his people fast when their own holding would fail. These young men were brought to yield to the truth of God, submit to his covenant, and learn that without faith it is impossible to please him.
Faith gave Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego three things to lay hold of. Faith laid hold of the power of God, so they could say, “Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us.” Faith laid hold of the character of God, so they could trust that he would not forsake them, whatever the outcome. Faith laid hold of the hope of a future state, so even death in the furnace could not overthrow obedience. Nebuchadnezzar’s furnace was fearful, but it was nothing compared with losing eternal life. Their answer was wise and noble, “But if not,” they would not serve his gods.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Principle steadies tried conduct Principle makes conduct reliable when impulse, accident, and custom would toss a soul like a wave of the sea. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did not merely react bravely in a difficult moment. Their stand before the king revealed a settled inward government, the kind of sameness that appears even under pressure. [23:08]
- 2. Grace arrests morally loose lives The moral looseness of Judah shows that religious surroundings do not of themselves produce holy fear. These young men came from a people who had the law, prophets, temple, and covenant language, yet were full of idolatry and double standards. Life changing grace is the miracle that turns mere knowledge of God into submission to God. [43:23]
- 3. Faith rests on God’s power Faith did not pretend the furnace was harmless, but faith knew the living God was able. The God of the Red Sea, Jordan, Jericho, Asa, and Hezekiah had not lost strength in Babylon. When creatures say, “help is not in me,” faith lays hold on the God who does exceeding abundantly above all that can be asked or thought. [53:38]
- 4. God’s character does not forsake The character of God gives confidence when the outcome remains in his hand. God is ready to pardon, gracious, merciful, slow to anger, of great kindness, and, most wonderfully, he does not forsake his people. Such trust can say with Job, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him.” [62:04]
- 5. Hope looks beyond the furnace Their “but if not” only makes sense because death was not annihilation to them. If there were nothing beyond the grave, martyrdom would be madness, not duty. Hope in God weighs the furnace against eternal glory, and the sufferings of the present time cannot compare with what God has promised. [66:00]
