A Piece of the Puzzle - Live Stream

Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 12 show that God does not make His people uniform. The Spirit gives different gifts, the Lord gives different kinds of service, and God brings different activities out of that service. God’s design is not a room full of people trying to be the same thing. God takes people who look different, think different, and serve in different ways, and makes a mosaic of His glory.

The Spirit gives gifts for the common good. A gift is not given so somebody can look smart, get noticed, or build a name for themselves. God uses the person serving coffee, changing diapers, running sound, cleaning rooms, leading groups, teaching kids, giving money, or speaking from the front so that somebody else can hear, grow, rest, receive help, or meet Christ. The same Spirit who moved over the waters, filled Bezalel with skill, empowered Samson, and descended on Jesus lives in God’s people and energizes their service.

Paul’s body picture cuts down both inferiority and pride. The foot cannot quit because it is not a hand, and the eye cannot tell the hand, “I do not need you.” God has arranged every part just as He wanted it. A church cannot work if everybody wants to preach, lead, bring water to the picnic, or stand where people can see them. The visible parts are not the only important parts. The heart, lungs, and spleen do not get seen, but nobody can live without them. The people serving behind the scenes are not filler. They are vital.

The ugly duckling picture names another real struggle. Some people try hard in a place that does not fit, then assume they simply need to try harder. God may be showing them that they are not a duck in that pond at all. A swan does not become a swan by working harder at being a duck. God may lead a person toward a different service where the gift He already gave begins to make sense.

Paul calls every member indispensable, like the one missing piece in a thousand-piece puzzle. Christ did not save people merely to sit and watch. Christ sends His body to share the gospel through words, feet, service, mercy, and everyday life. Yet love, not guilt, must move that service. God gives seasons for resting, listening, and being refreshed. The greater gift is love, because love changes service from obligation into a gift given back to God and to His people.
