Bible ReadingJohn 21:15-22 “So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?’ He said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.’ He said to him, ‘Feed My lambs.’ He said to him again a second time, ‘Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?’ He said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.’ He said to him, ‘Tend My sheep.’ He said to him the third time, ‘Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?’ Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, ‘Do you love Me?’ And he said to Him, ‘Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed My sheep. Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.’ This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, ‘Follow Me.’ Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, ‘Lord, who is the one who betrays You?’ Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, ‘But Lord, what about this man?’ Jesus said to him, ‘If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.’”
[42:11]John 18:15-18, 25-27 “And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, ‘You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself. [...] Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. Therefore they said to him, ‘You are not also one of His disciples, are you?’ He denied it and said, ‘I am not!’ One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, ‘Did I not see you in the garden with Him?’ Peter then denied again; and immediately a rooster crowed.”
1 Peter 5:2-4 “Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.”
Hebrews 5:12-14 “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”
Observation questions- In John 21, what three things does Jesus tell Peter to do after Peter answers, “You know that I love You”? [01:10:26]
- What details connect Peter’s denial in John 18 with his restoration in John 21, especially around the fire and the repeated questions? [01:08:05]
- In John 21:18-22, what does Jesus tell Peter about Peter’s future, and how does Peter respond when he notices John? [01:31:37]
- According to Hebrews 5:12-14, what marks the difference between spiritual infancy and maturity? [01:11:41]
Interpretation questions- Jesus asks Peter, “Do you love Me?” before giving him work to do. What does that show about what Christ wants first from a disciple: performance, usefulness, or affection? [01:07:20]
- Jesus restores Peter at a charcoal fire, the same kind of place where Peter had denied Him. What might this suggest about how Christ deals with shame and failure? [52:50]
- Jesus says, “Feed My lambs,” “Tend My sheep,” and “Feed My sheep.” What is the difference between feeding and tending, and why are both necessary in the life of the church? [01:21:14]
- When Jesus tells Peter, “What is that to you? You follow Me,” what does that reveal about comparison and personal obedience in the Christian life? [01:32:03]
Application questions- Peter had a worst day, and Jesus still came to restore him. Is there a failure, regret, or shameful moment that still shapes how someone sees himself or herself before God? What would it look like to believe that grace reaches there too? [50:19]
- Christ does not first ask about gifts, activity, or results. He asks, “Do you love Me?” What has been getting more attention lately—love for Christ or just religious motion? How could that be honestly checked this week? [01:09:30]
- Junk spoils the appetite for real food. What kinds of “junk” have been filling the mind and heart lately in a way that makes Scripture harder to receive? What practical change might help make room for the word again? [01:15:00]
- Feeding can happen from a distance, but tending happens up close, and up close is where bites happen. Where has someone pulled back from caring for people because closeness has been painful? What would wise, faithful nearness look like now? [01:21:45]
- The word of God gives discernment for the world, the flesh, and the devil. In what area of life is stronger discernment needed right now—relationships, entertainment, habits, speech, or something else? How might steady time in the word help there? [01:28:06]
- Jesus told Peter that his road would be hard and then told him not to compare it with John’s. Where is comparison making obedience harder right now? What would it mean to hear Jesus say personally, “You follow Me”? [01:31:50]
- The one a disciple follows is the one that disciple will stand before. How does that truth reshape everyday decisions, especially when pleasing people feels easier than pleasing Christ? [01:38:08]
