Peter’s Confession and Collapse: The Cost of Discipleship

Matthew 16 puts Peter in Caesarea Philippi, far away from the noise and pressure, where Jesus asks the question every disciple has to answer: “Who do you say that I am?” Jesus does not need information from the disciples. Jesus knows Jerusalem and the cross are coming, and Jesus is cementing their resolve before things get ugly.

Peter gets the answer right. Peter says, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God,” and Jesus says that flesh and blood did not reveal this truth to him. God reveals Christ’s identity, and Jesus builds his church. Jesus is the subject of that promise: “I will build my church.” The church is not the general contractor. Christ builds it, and the Holy Spirit brings people together to be workers and stewards within it.

Peter’s right answer quickly becomes a catastrophic wrong answer. Peter wants a Messiah with a crown, a white horse, and victory over Rome, but Peter does not want a Messiah who bears a cross. Jesus calls Peter a rock, then calls him a stumbling block only a few verses later. Peter’s confession is true, but Peter does not yet understand what that confession costs.

Matthew later places Peter beside a charcoal fire, where a servant girl asks a question that carries real danger. Peter, who confessed Christ in a quiet place where it cost him nothing, says three times, “I don’t know the man.” The difference between an answer and a confession is cost. An answer is what somebody knows. A confession is what somebody says when saying it might cost freedom, security, reputation, comfort, or even life.

Peter’s denial grows out of surprise at the cost and distance from his people. Peter signs up for a movement but cannot yet grasp a self-sacrificial kingdom. Peter stands alone in a courtyard, warming his hands with people who do not know his name. Distance is where confession dies, not doubt. The church becomes the place where believers live close enough to God and one another to hold fast when the fire gets hot.

Jesus does not leave Peter at the fire. Jesus finds Peter on the beach, beside another charcoal fire, and asks three times, “Do you love me?” Jesus gives Peter a chance to answer rightly as many times as Peter denied him. Jesus offers no probation and no reduced role. Jesus simply says, “Feed my sheep.” Failing the test is survivable. Deciding the test is the final verdict is not. Christ still asks the question, and a living sacrifice answers it regardless of the cost.
