Created For More: Personal Revival // Jon Quitt

The call to revival begins with the refusal to call spiritual mediocrity normal. Lukewarmness, carnality, and defeat do not name the life God made His people for. Revival is not first about spectacle. Revival is God doing more of what He normally loves to do: saving people, healing people, setting people free, and mending what sin has broken.

Personal revival begins when Christ brings a person out of spiritual death and into life. Restoration follows, because sin does not only make people guilty before God, but robs them of blessing, favor, intimacy, and healthy relationships. God’s re-forming work then gets down to the live nerve. The old identity gets pulled apart, and a new identity in Christ gets put in place. This hurts, but God is not trying to leave anyone untouched.

God’s fingerprints eventually go on everything. Every dollar, every attitude, every word, every step, every gift belongs to Him and becomes an opportunity for worship and surrender. Gathered people who have surrendered like that carry something more than good music or decent preaching. The Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead marks a room, wakes up faith, and causes people to believe again that they were created for more.

Josiah gives a picture of that kind of awakening. Israel had wandered into idolatry, adultery, and cold-hearted worship. Josiah came from a line that hated God, yet God sovereignly woke up an eight-year-old king. Josiah reached back to David because he had no natural father or grandfather to show him how to seek Yahweh. The book of the Law, lost for seventy-five years, broke Josiah’s heart when it was found and read aloud.

Josiah’s revival moved through radical repentance. Syncretism had mixed worship of Yahweh with the idols of the culture, just as the American church can mix devotion to Jesus with politics, prosperity, and the American dream. Josiah did not merely feel bad or make a few reforms. He tore down the high places, crushed idols to powder, and removed the stumbling blocks that future generations could trip over.

Radical repentance treats sin like chemo, radiation, and surgery all rolled into one. Sin crouches at the door, eager to control, and little “toy sins” become generational strongholds when they remain untouched. Seeking God then means reorganizing life around Him rather than fitting Him into an already crowded schedule. A responsive heart humbles itself, weeps before God, and builds a life that orbits around His purposes.
