[36:03] 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
[36:10] 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”
[36:16] 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”

[34:17]Observation questions- What commands surround Paul’s instruction to “rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer”? What kinds of relationships and situations does Paul address in this passage? [35:23]
- In Romans 12:13–21, what are the specific actions believers are called to take toward strangers, fellow Christians, people who are suffering, and enemies?
- What contrast does Paul make between being overcome by evil and overcoming evil with good? [36:55]
- What examples of difficult circumstances can make praise and prayer feel hard, and what simple practice was used to turn attention toward God in the middle of pain? [33:25]
Interpretation questions- Why might Paul place constant prayer in the same verse as hope and patience in suffering? How does prayer help keep suffering from becoming the final word in a believer’s heart? [39:26]
- Romans 12 calls believers to bless persecutors, refuse revenge, and care for enemies. Why is a close, active relationship with Christ necessary for living this way rather than merely trying harder? [49:11]
- Romans 8:28 says God works all things together for good for those who love him. How can this promise bring comfort without claiming that every painful event is itself good? [40:30]
- Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” What might biblical stillness look like for a believer facing change, unanswered prayer, pain, or uncertainty? [41:01]
Application questions- When life is painful, busy, or full of change, what usually happens to your prayer life? What could a realistic rhythm of prayer look like for you this week—in the morning, evening, or during a hard moment? [40:05]
- Prayer does not need to be formal to be real. When have you felt distant from the Lord, and what would it look like to simply reconnect with him honestly today? [40:12]
- Breathing the name of God can be a simple reminder that the great I AM is near in weakness and pain. Is there a stressful, sleepless, or anxious moment in which you could pause, breathe, and turn your attention to the Lord? [33:50]
- Which part of Romans 12 feels most difficult for you right now: showing honor, serving with zeal, offering hospitality, weeping with others, living peaceably, or blessing someone who has hurt you? What specific prayer do you need to bring to Christ about that relationship or situation?
- God may answer prayer with “yes,” “yes, but not yet,” or “no.” Is there a prayer you are still waiting on, or an answer you do not understand? How can you keep bringing that request to God while trusting his wisdom? [40:30]
- Think of one person who is rejoicing and one person who is weeping. What could it look like this week to enter more fully into each person’s experience rather than staying distant? [49:01]
- A faithful praying community can have an influence far beyond what it can see at the moment. What need in the church, neighborhood, family, or world will you commit to pray for regularly, and how can the group support that commitment? [47:15]
