Pentecost 17 - Let’s have more in common!

Peter begins with the end of all things being near, not to stir up panic, but to put God’s people in the right frame of mind. Jesus has already come, saved the world from sin, conquered death and hell, and at any time could return to bring his people into the full eternal life he has won. Peter therefore calls the flock to be alert, sober-minded, and free from false priorities and enslaving sins.

God’s big idea is a greater community, one that moves away from the lone-wolf life and into the enjoyment of being a flock. The world’s version of community can become little more than scrolling, tapping, and getting what a person wants on demand. God’s version puts actual people together, with all their needs, failures, gifts, and opportunities to care.

Peter names love as the first ingredient. Love does not keep a record of wrongs, collect receipts, improve ammunition for the next argument, or turn another person’s shame into a story. The image of Shem and Japheth walking backward to cover Noah’s shame shows the kind of love that protects rather than exposes. Jesus has already taken every shameful sin upon himself and stood fully exposed under judgment. Christ’s love has covered the multitude of his people’s sins, and that same forgiveness gives the flock a reason to cover, forgive, and remain together.

Peter names hospitality as the second ingredient. Hospitality sees needs beyond food, clothing, house, and home, and it gives without calculating the cost. God calls his people to offer that care without grumbling, because hurting people need help that does not make them feel like a burden. Hospitality becomes a network of care: meals, rides, child care, practical help, space to rest, and support in seasons of grief, illness, exclusion, depression, divorce, or loss.

Peter names service as the third ingredient. God gives different gifts not so that his people go separate ways, but so that they depend on one another and bless one another uniquely. Each person is not unnecessary but is a gift God has placed in the room. Christ broke down the barriers that sin deserved, the barriers of being cut off from God and stuck alone. Jesus sends his sheep out with shepherd skills in their hearts, so that the flock may cover, support, and serve until his great day.
