15th Sunday after Pentecost at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church

Paul’s words, “Love does no wrong to a neighbor,” land differently when the Roman church remembers who is writing them. Paul had once been Saul, a zealot so sure of his religion and worldview that he rounded up neighbors who followed Jesus and cheered while they were killed. Paul knows from the inside what happens when certainty about God’s law becomes a weapon against God’s people.

Romans spends its first eleven chapters making the grand claim that God loves everybody, all creation, all the time, through Christ. Paul piles up the good stuff: no condemnation in Christ, no power in heaven or earth able to separate anybody from the love of God. Paul then turns from the indicative to the imperative. God has loved them radically in Jesus, and therefore they ought to start acting like it.

Paul’s move into the ethical life of the church is not a soft suggestion to be nicer. Paul calls love the fulfilling of the law. Paul even places that claim beside his troubling words about earthly authorities, forcing the question Christian ethics has always had to ask: what happens when government does not love the neighbor? Love becomes the measure that stands over every religious, political, law-and-order claim.

Christ changes Paul by stopping him on the Damascus road and asking, “Why are you persecuting me?” Jesus identifies himself with the people Saul is hunting down. Ananias then calls the dangerous man “Brother Saul,” lays hands on him, and gives him back his sight. God’s holy foolishness overturns human strength by putting the neighbor first, doing no harm, and loving where self-protection would rather draw a line.

Jesus gathers a body not because its members know everything or agree on everything. Christ gathers people who would not necessarily choose one another and commands them to stay together in love. Jesus himself loved the people respectable religion preferred to keep at a distance: sinners, wounded people, last and least people. Christ never commanded love for only the easily lovable, nor did Christ authorize anybody to decide who is worthy of welcome.

The church’s life therefore asks something almost miraculous. The church asks people to give themselves to strangers, remain in loving conversation with those who put them off, receive grace through imperfect people, and keep talking, listening, praying, and loving when splitting up would be easier. God’s extravagant love for all in Christ becomes a command: love the neighbor.
