The encounter with God disrupts complacency, demanding we release lesser treasures to grasp the ultimate one. Renunciation isn’t loss but liberation – trading temporary comforts for eternal fulfillment. True possession comes when we hold nothing back, letting God’s presence become our true home. This rhythm mirrors the merchant selling everything for the pearl of infinite worth. [18:12]

Sermon Summary

Conversion begins with a search, because the desire for God is written on every human heart. Holy Mother Church says it plain in Catechism 27: man was created by God and for God, and only in God does man find the truth and happiness he is always searching for. The human heart wants happiness, truth, and a stable foundation, but the heart keeps running into the same problem: plenty of things look good, but only God satisfies all the way down.

The pearl of great price and the treasure in the field bring the search to a decision. The merchant finds what he was looking for, and the search is over. Wisdom makes that clear. The wisdom Solomon asked for is the wisdom to know right from wrong, to know what is good and what is not, and to recognize what is truly good when it stands right in front of the soul. Halfway happiness cannot carry the weight of the human heart. It may satisfy for a minute, but it does not possess the depth of God.

The decision after finding the treasure is not small. The heart has to choose whether to keep everything that used to work, or to sell all with joy and possess the treasure of the kingdom. Comfort becomes the great temptation, because a person can know where the treasure is and still hang on to too much junk. The call of God is not a call to be comfortable. The call of God is a call to greatness, and that call shakes everything that has settled for less.

The rich young man shows the sorrow of holding back. He kept the commandments, checked the boxes, and looked like he was doing everything right. But Jesus put his finger on the one thing he lacked: sell all, and follow. The sadness came because his possessions possessed him. The same moment comes whenever God asks for friends, family, reputation, being liked, being known, or anything else that has become too precious to lose.

The joy of surrender is the freedom of giving everything to God. The laying down of a life says that futures, dreams, desires, and plans belong to him. The kingdom of heaven is not only far away after death. The red sanctuary lamp says the kingdom is here, present now. God asks for all or nothing, because the true treasure is God himself, the one who satisfies the hunger of the heart, the one whom the soul possesses and by whom the soul is possessed.
