Acts traces the church being born by the power of the Holy Spirit and then building life around God’s priorities: the word, fellowship and communion, and prayer. Acts shows again and again that growth does not come first through strategy or organization, but through the spiritual condition of God’s people. The Lord added daily, the word of God spread, the disciples multiplied greatly, and the same bride is still being prepared for his return.
Acts 9 sets the scene with Saul, the man who took personal ownership of persecution against the church. God intercepted him on the road to Damascus, brought that “whoosh against the church” to a radical conclusion, and said, in effect, Saul is his man. Acts 9:31 then says the churches throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace, were edified, walked in the fear of the Lord and the comfort of the Holy Spirit, and were multiplied.
The peace in Acts 9:31 is more than just no more war. The peace is the peace Jesus gives, the peace that lets the people of God flourish in relationship with the Lord. The church was not necessarily free from every challenge, but the church was becoming more anchored in Christ and able to experience perfect peace.
Edification means building a house, constructing, building up. The church grew deeper before it grew larger. Every word opened, every opportunity for prayer, every Bible study, every conversation was laying foundations. The word was being deposited like money in a bank account, so that when need arose, there was something strong to draw from.
The fear of the Lord is not terror from punishment. The fear of the Lord is awe, reverence, wonder, and a deep awareness of God’s holiness. Isaiah 6 gives the picture: Isaiah sees the Lord, cries, “woe is me,” and yet God does not leave him condemned. God cleanses him, draws him near, and commissions him.
The comfort of the Holy Spirit brings the other side of the balance. God is holy and reverent, yet God is near. The Spirit encourages, strengthens, guides, empowers, and comes alongside as helper, advocate, and comforter. The New Testament church held it together: trembling at his word and resting in his presence, walking in obedience and intimacy.
Multiplication came because the church did not become casual in a quieter season. The church used the season to build, consolidate, walk in holy reverence, and live in the comfort of the Spirit. The word of God coupled with the power of the Holy Spirit remains the strong foundation where increase comes.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Peace is deeper than quiet The peace in Acts 9:31 is not merely the absence of persecution or trouble. The peace Christ gives anchors a person in who he is, even when every challenge has not disappeared. God’s peace creates room for a deeper flourishing, not just a more comfortable life. [72:10]
- 2. Foundations are built by deposits Edification is the slow, strong work of building a house that can stand. The word, prayer, fellowship, and spiritual conversations put truth into the heart like deposits into a bank account. When pressure comes, the soul draws from what has already been stored there. [75:00]
- 3. Holy fear draws people closer The fear of the Lord is awe, reverence, and wonder before God’s holiness, not a terror that pushes the heart away. Isaiah’s “woe is me” did not end in distance, because God cleansed him and commissioned him. True reverence makes obedience feel like a privilege, not a burden. [79:26]
- 4. The Spirit comforts with strength The comfort of the Holy Spirit is more than feeling better for a moment. The Spirit comes alongside to encourage endurance, strengthen obedience, guide the believer, and empower life in Christ. God’s nearness does not cancel his holiness, and his holiness does not cancel his nearness. [83:29]
- 5. Multiplication follows faithful depth Acts 9:31 shows God building deep before building large. The church did not waste a quieter season by becoming casual, but used it to be edified, reverent, and Spirit-led. Increase came where the word of God and the comfort of the Holy Spirit were held together.
