Paul's Model: Bold Church Engagement in a Fallen Culture

Ecclesiastes says history merely repeats itself, because nothing under the sun is truly new. The evil showing up in the culture may wear a different mask through social media, violence, sexual confusion, and public pressure, but human nature has been cycling through the same darkness for a long time. The church must not get desensitized just because evil has become common news.

Paul’s spirit was stirred in Athens because the whole city was given over to idolatry. Paul did not sit in a “do nothing Christian center” and hope somebody else would deal with it. Paul broke the silent tone in the synagogue, confronted false religious voices, and disputed daily in the public square. The church is called to be the disruption to evil’s advancement, the bulwark that pushes back the gates of hell.

Acts 17 shows Paul confronting the same kinds of issues still being fought in the culture. God made the world and all things in it, so creation belongs to God rather than the lie of evolution. God gives life and breath to all, so life in the womb is not disposable. God made all nations from one blood, so racial pride and division are schemes that pit people against one another rather than honoring the human race under God.

God determined the bounds of nations, so borders matter. God is not far from any person, so the true God belongs in the public square and must not be pushed aside to make room for every idol. Paul declares that God does not share His place with silver, gold, stone, or false gods. God commands all people everywhere to repent, which means turning from evil rather than asking God to bless what He calls sin.

Christ will judge the world in righteousness, not according to the culture’s changing standard. The church does people a disservice when eternity and judgment are left unspoken. Paul’s boldness did not produce only one response: some mocked, some wanted to hear more, and some clave to him and received Christ. God calls believers to settle the cost ahead of time, stand even when it hurts, and refuse fear that tries to take them out of the fight.
