Bible ReadingEphesians 3:1-6 “For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles— assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for you, how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.”
[00:02:44]1 Timothy 1:12-17 “I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.”
[00:48:19]Acts 7:54-60 “Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him. But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. And he said, 'Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.' But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together at him. Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.' And falling to his knees he cried out, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them.' And when he had said this, he fell asleep.”
[00:39:08]Colossians 1:15-20 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”
[00:21:28]Observation questions- In Ephesians 3:1-6, what words or phrases show that Gentiles are no longer outsiders but are now fully included in God’s people?
- In 1 Timothy 1:12-17, what does Paul call his former life, and what reasons does he give for why he received mercy? [00:50:21]
- In Acts 7:54-60, what do Stephen’s words and actions reveal about his response to suffering and to the people killing him?
- In Colossians 1:15-20, what are the different things this passage says about who Jesus is and what Jesus has done? [00:21:28]
Interpretation questions- Paul says he is “a prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles.” What does that suggest about how Paul understood his suffering and his calling?
- Ephesians puts gospel before conduct. Why is that order so important? What tends to go wrong when people try to focus on Christian behavior before new identity in Christ? [00:23:25]
- Paul says Christ came to save sinners and calls himself the foremost. How does Paul’s testimony help a person who feels too guilty, too dirty, or too far gone to be saved? [00:52:42]
- Colossians 1 says Jesus created all things, holds all things together, and made peace by the blood of his cross. How does seeing who Jesus is help a person understand why his cross is enough to save? [00:20:30]
Application questions- Many people still drift toward thinking God accepts them because they are trying hard or being decent. Where is that temptation showing up most in life right now: parenting, marriage, work, church life, or private sin? What would it look like to come back to gospel first, then conduct? [00:23:25]
- Christian fruit does not grow by fleshly effort alone. Where has there been more focus on managing behavior than on abiding in Christ and depending on the Holy Spirit? What might need to change this week? [00:17:31]
- Jesus is worth more than all the sinners he saves put together. When life feels shaky or sin feels heavy, what helps the heart remember the greatness of Christ instead of shrinking him down into “just one more religious figure”? [00:20:30]
- Paul did not hide who he used to be, because grace looked bigger against the truth of his past. Is there part of a personal story that has been kept quiet out of shame, even though it could display the mercy of Jesus if shared wisely? [00:57:56]
- Testimony is not just “I believe in Jesus,” but also “here is how Jesus has actually changed me.” What is one clear before-and-after work of grace that could be shared with another believer, a family member, or an unbelieving friend? [00:59:55]
- Courage is not the absence of fear, but obedience in the presence of fear. Where is there fear right now about speaking of Jesus or inviting someone into Christian community? What would one small act of courage look like in the next seven days? [00:05:46]
- The gospel tears down dividing walls and makes one body out of different kinds of people. Is there any person or kind of person that is quietly treated like an outsider in the heart? How might the truth that Gentiles are fellow heirs reshape that attitude? [00:25:17]
