Patience means self restraint before moving to action. Patience has the power to avenge itself, but it holds back. Impatience says, “Only me matters,” and that kind of spirit makes every delay, every question, every person, feel like a problem.
Ephesians 4 calls the Christian to humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another in love. Bearing with one another does not mean putting up with wickedness or tolerating bad behavior. Bearing with one another means being mindful that every person is carrying burdens, weaknesses, and conflicts that may not be visible. Impatience forgets that and bites the head off an innocent person who simply walked into the wrong moment.
God’s own patience stands behind the call to patience. Romans 2 says God’s kindness, forbearance, and patience are meant to lead people to repentance. God does not show patience so sin can be excused. God shows patience so repentance can happen, and Christ expects that same kind of patience to be shown toward others.
Judgment becomes dangerous when the judge practices the same heart sins being condemned. Romans 1 names envy, strife, deceit, gossip, slander, pride, foolishness, faithlessness, and ruthlessness. These sins can live right inside a church. Visible sins are easy to judge, but sins of the heart can be just as deadly.
Matthew 5 presses patience even further. God makes the sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and unjust. Loving only those who are easy to love is not different from the world. Christ in the believer means more patience with unbelievers, not joining their sin, but understanding where they are coming from and showing the fruit of the Spirit.
Balaam’s donkey shows how impatience blinds a person. Balaam was so angry at the donkey that he could not see the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword. Anger, impatience, and a loose mouth can wreck a life fast, because words cannot be taken back once they leave the mouth.
Psalm 37 calls the righteous to be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him. Trials reveal what is happening in the middle, not just at the beginning or end. Patience may feel bitter, but its fruit is sweet. Losing patience means losing the battle.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Patience bears weakness in love [02:40] Ephesians does not call patience a nice personality trait. It commands humility, gentleness, and bearing with one another in love. Real patience notices that another person’s weakness is not always rebellion, and it refuses to make personal irritation the center of the room. [02:40]
- 2. God’s kindness aims at repentance [05:11] Romans 2 shows that God’s patience is never soft on sin. God’s kindness gives space for repentance, not permission for arrogance. The believer who has benefited from divine patience cannot turn around and treat difficult people as beyond redemption. [05:11]
- 3. Heart sins still destroy fellowship [09:34] Gossip, slander, envy, strife, and maliciousness may not look as public as other sins, but they poison a church from the inside. The tongue can make impatience sound justified, especially when irritation feels righteous. A patient heart refuses to turn annoyance into conversation that damages another person. [09:34]
- 4. Impatience blinds the spiritual eye [21:52] Balaam could see a stubborn donkey, but he could not see the angel of the Lord in the road. Impatience narrows vision until the only thing visible is the obstacle. A rash reaction may feel powerful in the moment, but it can miss what God is blocking, warning, or protecting. [21:52]
- 5. God watches the middle of trials [29:29] The beginning of a trial is remembered, and the end of a trial is appreciated, but the middle exposes endurance. Patience asks for stronger faith, not just faster escape. The bitter stretch can become a glorious testimony when the believer stays still before the Lord instead of fretting and complaining. [29:29]
